hi all 


 


I have been in mooney 2 C and One K but never in the extra long models. Can anyone help me with what is the flyablity of the EL version compared to K. Trying to made descion on whether to go with K or an Eagle or Ovation at this time thx

I think that you'll find the transition to a long-body relatively straightforward. From a pilot's perspective, it essentially comes down to a slightly more pronounced pitch-up attitude on the flare. But your passengers will love the extra leg room, and the baggage capacity is significantly improved.

Flying wise, for me, in the Ovation, I had to adjust to all the different and more complicated systems than my E model.  It is a lot "heavier" to fly feeling wise.  In regard to landing I got some instruction and became comfortable slowing it down and coming over the fence at 70-75 kts [wind/weather dependent].  I also decided to get some CFII time and went over emergency procedures. We routinely fly into a 2300 foot strip in the Ovation.


For us, the Ovation best met our mission profile.

I have owned two E models and now a Bravo.  I have flown lots in J and K models.  Just after the turn of the century I sold my T-210 and was looking to move back to a Mooney.  I was shopping for a Rocket but got a demo ride in a Bravo.  I appreciated the extra space of the Bravo so I decided I would give up the greater performance of the Rocket and buy a Bravo.  I do long trips so I do like the bigger cabin and the baggage space.  The newer airplanes do not handle as well as the older ones but most of my flying is straight and level. I do not like having to hold the nose up more than 4.5 degrees to keep to the nose wheel off the runway in stout crosswinds but that is a necessary compromise.  The Bravo with Stormscope and TKS is pretty much an all weather airplane which I like.  If you travel go for the bigger model.  If you mostly fly locally buy a smaller model, they are more fun to fly.

I think you will find the long body models a bit easier to land than the shorter body. The long body's are all likely newer, have 28 volt systems, and may have better avionics.  After that, it is a budget decision.  The 252 is a very good plane and it is near impossible to beat the combination of performance and fuel effeciency along with the flexibility of going higher than an Ovation or Eagle.  I like the Ovation better than the Eagle for the autopilot, avionics, and higher power (of course the eagle can be upgraded).

If your money man/person sits in the back, the long body is an easy choice.


A long body with turbo, tks, and XM, is a professional pilot's dream.


I'm a big fan of the ovation after a decade with a growing family in an M20C...
