Mooney1401 Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 I have a broken strobe light and can not figure out What bulb I need to replace it with. It is powered by a whelen A490 supply and is mounted on bracket that Says use grimes reflection lamps only. Any ideas as to What the part number is I need to order Or if I can put a whelen strobe light in there and What one that would be. Quote
Jeff_S Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 I have no answer to your question, but I like the poetry in which you've phrased it! Quote

Mooney1401 Posted June 15, 2012 Author Report Posted June 15, 2012 Thanks Andrew. I have a 78 M20J Quote
N9453V Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 Mooney retrofitted my airplane in 1980 and I believe the same strobes were in use since 1977, so most likely you would need the following: Left - Whelen A650PR14 (SDI/Hoskins/Grimes/BFGoodrich Part # 701303-1) Right - Whelen A650PG14 (SDI/Hoskins/Grimes/BFGoodrich Part # 701303-2) Tail - Whelen A500AV14 (SDI/Hoskins/Grimes/BFGoodrich Part # 701557-1M) I ordered my replacement tail stobe from Aero Parts & Supply in Dallas (http://www.2aps.com/w3avwing.htm) and I believe they were cheapest. The tail is $148 and the left/right are $208. Before ordering, just unscrew it and confirm the model number (just two screws to remove, you don't need to disconnect the wiring). -Andrew Quote
OR75 Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 I am thinking based on the year/model that your original strobe was a Hoskins system. The Wheelen A490 power supply is PMA'd for the original Hoskins and can be replaced by an A/P. For the lens / assembly it is a different story. The Wheelen A650 system is STC'd for pre-J only. It is not STC'd for the J model even if it is the same "flat" wing tip. So it required a 337 form it is was installed to replace the original Hoskins system or would require a 337 to be installed. For the early Js, the lens / strobe is a Mooney part that you would need to get from Mooney. You can recognize them easily: the lens is a cheap plastic hemisphere that yellows and becomes uggly and opaque very quickly. (Probably a good money maker but not a good long term strategy if you ask me). best woudl be to describe the lens you have or take a photo and we can zoom on a part number. Quote
jetdriven Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 The first is a Hoskins. Yes that is a can of beer. The second is a Whelen. Both on the same plane. It looks dumb at night with the single flash on the left wing and the triple flash on the right, so I turn them off at night. FWIW a Grimes tail light lens fits the Hoskins housing perfectly, then it remains clear forever, its glass. Quote
OR75 Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 I would pick the shiner bock in a heartbeat. the grimes tail light lens is a good suggestion. I replaced my strobes with the wheelens as I was tired of those plastic uggly lenses Quote

rob Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Quote: rob Well, technically maybe not. I just went through this. My mechanic would not install without a field approval. If you dig into the Whelen papaerwork, the A490TCF (Whelen part# 01-0770006-08) in their cross-reference guide is listed as PMA equivalent for the Hoskins, but Whelen has no approval for Mooney listed under their STC or PMA (although they have other applications listed) : STC SA615EA: Parts:01-0770006-( ) Whelen also says this power supply needs a 337 approval for a Mooney application, even though it is a cross referenced part. OR75 Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Rob: the A&P should be OK with replacing the power supply based on the PMA status of the 490 power supply unit. For the flashing assembly, it is a difference story. The J model is indeed not in the STC and the install would indeed require a form 337 / field approval. (even if the the early J models have the same "square" wing tips as the pre-Js.) Quote
Zulee Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 This string is about a year old and now so does anyone know if Whelen ever received the PMA for the A490 power supply to replace a J model or does it still require 337? Thanks for the feedback Rick Quote
Zulee Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 I forgot to mention my 81 model has the Hoskins 701295-3 14 volt Quote
