Notice 7930.114 - NOTAM Term Change from Notice to Air Missions to Notice to Airmen

Well they (dumb airplanes without people, whether they're smart or not ;)) were renamed several times in the AF for various political/branding (read butt-hurt) reasons, settling on Remotely Piloted Aircraft if IIRC. 

Personally, I'm happy they made NOTAMs great again.

Now if they could just tell me if there's going to be ice, turbulence, or bad weather I'd be happy as a clam... 

Instead it's all cranes and malfunctioning NDBs far away.

I thought the original change to 'Air Missions' was a dumb waste of time and resources, and equally a waste of time and resources to change it back to 'Airmen'.

Fix the system.....

And in the age of multi-gigabyte data transmission speeds, get rid of the 1920-era teletype abbreviations and use complete sentences written with whole words.

I had one of these printed and attached to the wall of the breifing room at my school, it reminded students to do the long one in the room and keep it short in the aircraft !

I thought likewise.   The only thing dumber than the original change is changing it back.    Change it to something descriptively neutral, like Aviation Notices, or Air Safety Notices, or Aviation Information (AI!), or something useful like that.

They're under pressure to be efficient, so they have to hit the higher priorities first.  ;)

It is seriously faster to read smart familiar abbreviations than some long windy thing. RADAT might be an archaic sounding term, but please save me from the 30 yr old dumb*** who has come up with a more up-to-date and inclusive name. 

As far as changing things back and forth, my general policy is resist neologisms and PC, since they are usually driven by politics or people seeking bullet points for a promotion (medical academics renaming diseases every 5 yrs, military senior FG or flag officers trying to advance, etc). Just leave the damn terminology alone. Erasing history means you might be on the "dumb side of intelligence" even if you're on the "right side of history".

Drone operators have a Remote Pilot certificate.  Just like your PP or Commercial or ATP.

Since an airman is a defined as a pilot, they are covered.

Or is the full plan to ban female pilots?

Its just plain stupid, Air Missions might sound clunky, but it was good that no one changed the acronym and still made it neutral.

This seems a bit of a d+ck move.

I wonder if other countries will follow. I hope not.

The rest of the world still knows where the Gulf of Mexico is.   Let's hope the pettiness stays limited to the US.

Sure thing! Let's just ignore 1500 years of history and the rules of English grammar, in order to possibly prevent offending highly-sensitized people.

And if taking that step offends other people, well, they don't matter anyway.

How do we ever determine which groups to avoid offending? Please note that there is no right to never be offended, and the very idea that there is offends me. So since someone will inevitably be offended, just follow the rules of grammar and offend fewer people.

49 USC § 40102(a)(8)

(8)“airman” means an individual—

(A) in command, or as pilot, mechanic, or member of the crew, who navigates aircraft when under way;
 
It seems that the definition in the Code is pretty neutral and all inclusive, regardless of what the person operating aircraft may be identifying as.

I'm definitely not one to go changing everything for the sake of a few offended individual.

BUT planes have hardly been around for 100 years so pilot-related terms have a much shorter history than 1500 years (even if the convention is further, English is a mixed bag and hardly ever follows its own rules)

I personally want to encourage as many women as possible to be pilots. Most of the female pilots i know are damn good at it. So if changing away from one word will help, then hey, no worries.

But that isn't even the point. The point is that right now someone has been so petty to change something from a perfectly fine  neutral acronym, to an obviously male-sounding one.

If you want to play the "what next" game....

next they roll back autopilot approvals because real men hand-fly their planes.

Next we can't say "Avgas" because its this modern generation shortening things, it must be called Aviation Gasoline.

From now on, only 2 kinds of fuel: car fuel and plane fuel. This 'diesel' and 'jet A1' wanting separate bowsers is not what God intended.

Running LOP will be banned because its all a conspiracy and burning fuel is good for the planet

 

 

I hope no one is offended....
