Sales Tax Exemption (Florida)/Ebay

A tip to those buying parts online through eBay. I just bought an item, and during checkout, they automatically charged sales tax. There was an option to contact customer support, and I received a phone call right away from a human being. The representative was very kind and instructed me to complete the checkout, assuring me that the sales tax would be refunded within 60 days.

I was impressed with how quickly I was able to reach someone and that they were able to resolve the issue, even though it's through an indirect process. Ideally, the representative should have the ability to remove the sales tax directly instead of issuing a refund.

Same thing with aircraft spruce. At the end of the process you have the option to request tax exemption

Aviation parts are tax exempt in many states. Ive bought a few aviation things on eBay and as long as they’re categorized right, eBay’s tax calculation generally works correctly.

In Wisconsin we pay no sales tax on aircraft parts or *labor*, which is nice.

Where do you find the list of states

or easier again is Arizona one of the exemption states?

This is from Mcfarlane - and it seems PRETTY accurate (but it’s missing WI). And like mentioned above, some also tax exempt labor on aviation too. I’m fortunate as my state exempts both. It’s not trivial on big upgrades.

Fl has a min gross weight, Mooney is over the limit whatever it is but I don’t think my C-140 is, I think LSA’s aren’t tax exempt for parts.

So I only buy Mooney parts now

Spruce has a much longer list of states with exemptions. Notably to me, including North Carolina.

That list says:

If your order is shipped to (or picked up in) one of the following states, it is subject to sales tax.

So it looks like you and I have to pay sales tax in North Carolina and Michigan?  And also on the freight charges?

Good point; maybe that's not the list I thought it was.

In NC we are definitely exempt for parts if they are for an aircraft whose max takeoff weight is 2000lbs or greater. Shipping of those parts is still subject to sales tax. Spruce does a nice job of automating that at checkout if you just enter the tail number and max takeoff weight.

The Aircraft Spruce list looks to be really inaccurate. Both the states I regularly ship to are except from state sales tax on aviation parts - and both are on their list. Normally, I'd just eat the incompetency or lack of effort to know state tax rules. But when you're buying a $8K or $14K piece of equipment, it makes a big difference.

I spoke way too soon... While I did receive one email attempting to resolve the tax issue, it completely missed the mark. I have not received any reply since (despite promising answer within 48 hours). I also can't seem to get to a human being on the phone. Sigh.
