onmy6 Posted September 16 Report Posted September 16 Hey guys! I am excited to join this forum. It seems like a great group compared to some other stuffy forums I belong to. I am 29 years old, from NJ, and have loved aviation from a young age. I am fortunate to have met a great man in middle school who built a velocity and I was up a few times over the years with him. My grandfather purchased property in PA and it has an airstrip on it (as well as a hangar). Boden airport 2pa4. No one has been in or out in 20years. He isn’t a pilot and never had intentions of becoming one. And he doesn’t let anyone land there. I’ve always wanted my PPL but never willing to spend the money on it. At 280lbs and 6ft. I am heavy and I have told myself when I hit 250 I plan to start lessons. My dream plane is a vans rv10 but I think a Mooney checks all the boxes and is much more attainable. My goal is to eventually buy a plane to get from my home to the property. There is an airport 20 minutes from me. Commuting by plane would really decrease the 3.5hr drive. I also plan to get my ifr ratings and travel a bit. I’ve traveled all over off roading with UTVs. Offshore fishing (NJ) 100 miles on my 25ft boat. I would love to make it to the Bahamas and other destinations. Probably make the trip to see my brother in Houston as well. Anyways, thanks for having me and I look forward to reading more about mooneys! 3 Quote
201Mooniac Posted September 16 Report Posted September 16 Welcome, looks like a nice grass strip. Hopefully you will get to land there soon. Quote
Paul Thomas Posted September 16 Report Posted September 16 Welcome! Since you mentioned RV's, the two seaters RV are more budget friendly and great planes to operate on grass. It looks like a beautiful runway. Quote
Shadrach Posted September 16 Report Posted September 16 Nice looking strip! 1900’ isn’t a lot but it’s enough for a lightweight mid or short body. At 2120’msl, dog day summertime operations could get a bit dodgy with DAs in excess of 5000’. Quote
dkkim73 Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 Welcome aboard! I think your goals are laudable. There is a lot of assistance and "smart approaches" to everything you mention including weight loss. We look forward to your first landing there as a private pilot. Quote
201er Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 All great goals and ideas but there’s a whole lot of things that need to happen before any of that or even a Mooney is relevant. I would suggest setting smaller short term goals and enjoy the journey to each of those first downs as you work your way down the field. A great place to start is to get your medical and first lesson. Then work on learning to fly, prepping to solo, doing xcountrys, private checkride, and doing some travel in the planes you trained in. Build experience in airplanes designed to aid and survive learning. Enjoy fast cross country travel when you’ve already advanced beyond all the basics. Good luck. Quote
Utah20Gflyer Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 I love my Mooney but you might want to consider a Cessna 182. They can haul a lot, are reasonably fast and are great for operating off less improved runways. 1800 feet is tight for most Mooneys but wouldn’t be an issue for a Cessna 182. Getting in and out is much easier as well, I’m still working on making a graceful entrance into my Mooney, I’ve come close a couple times and think I’ll get it eventually. I had a bunch of goals I set for myself before I bought a plane. I did all of them and then set a few extra goals. Once I did the extra ones I went ahead with buying a plane. I get the desire to place conditions on something you want but don’t go overboard with it. 1 Quote
