That was my first thought when I found out that David was bringing that A model home. I look forward to seeing just how fast the airframe will go on 150hp with a wing that’s aerodynamically optimized.

This has just given me a boost to get going!!

In my opinion no well designed aircraft can fill all of the seats and fill the tanks.

I've been on quite a few 787 flights recently that were 17-18 hours long and had nearly every seat full :)

But for the piston single GA market, it seems most manufacturers today expect the seats/fuel tradeoff.

Still, in both of the aircraft I normally fly, I can put 4x150lb adults in the plane and be under max gross weight with full fuel.  And that's with the Mooney at the original 2740lb.  At 2900lb, the Mooney can actually do 4x190lb adults.

Ah, the 'unicorn' adult human: 150 pounds!

Yeah, but not impossible. When the Piper was my primary ac, it wasn’t unusual for me to fly with two couples - you can get to 4x150 with 2x 170lb and 2x 130lb or whatever.

People were smaller back when Mooneys started down the line !

Heck Bill Wheat MIGHT have been 150# dripping wet.

I am sure there was a delta in performance but the additional cost was likely significant.

I believe Mooney Mart/Coy Jacob’s offered airfoil optimization. I recall reading an article he penned about how the mid chord area where the top skin is riveted to the spar has a lot of potential for improvement.

yes then it looks like this

That’s noticeably cleaner than my stock wing. No wonder you’re getting book numbers.

Interesting..  What does the "airfoil optimization" actually involve?

It’s not Bondo. It’s micro balloons and west epoxy. We probably mixed up about a 2 quarts of it and we sanded off about 95% of it…that stuff floats too.   Then there’s a few layers of Sherwin-Williams epoxy primer. That’s also about 90% blocked and sanded off. You’ve got to keep the film build down or else the paint can chip. So 2 pounds maybe.

Reminds me of the M20 and M20A wing.   They're smooth like that, but all the way back.   It does make a difference.

You don't see low aspect ratios and rivets on the top if high performance gliders either do you?  :-) ;-)

The knowledge is there (has been for almost 100 years) of what makes a clean wing and why

It all boils down to the trade offs of design. Gain something here and lose something there.

And then the industry matures in materials and process and the market moves on to better things

How many times do you fill all the seats AND need full tanks?  IOW, someone will want to stop after 3 or 3 1/2 hours.

Kinda of a dumb question. Is Johhmy Pollack still the CEO of Mooney? We haven't heard from him in a while and i can't seem to find his account on here. He used to answer questions and what not. After he sold his Acclaim he's been radio silent

Did he in fact sell his Acclaim (N705SE) or did he just transfer it to an LLC?  N705SE is now registered to TXNY LLC which suspiciously sounds like someone that lives in NY that travels to TX.....

The account he used in the past still exists, but he has not signed in under that name since December 2022.  His last post was July 2022.  Has he become a Zombie CEO or is he lurking around incognito under another name?...

I suggested that he show up once a month or so, and got slammed by everyone saying he did not have time for that.  So now we sit with NO communications for 18 months.

He has time to talk to others about how Mooney is making good margins making parts for other aircraft companies.
