I received an incoming call on my cell today.  (said likely spam, but I answered).  FSDO calling (courtesy call) as they had received an anonymous (sounds ominous) call that my plane might NOT have the proper Registration on board.  Individual was professional and said he was mostly calling to confirm that I knew how to get a copy, he could assist.  I assured him that I had received the Registration and it was indeed in my plane.  I had a temorary registration (letter) that proceeded receipt and this was in plane until receipt.  I checked on line through Registration look-up and it is not updated so I will be contacting them to get that fixed.  So, anonymous "person" in the wild.  Thanks...I guess.  :)

There is not enough time in the day for any FSDO to ensure that every airplane in their jurisdiction is properly registered.

There is a rat somewhere in this process. Who wants to get you in trouble with the FAA?

I can only think of one strong candidate.  An area avionics shop.  I had verbally agreed (after first of year to proceed with a quote on an 830 install.  An additional installation of an intercom was to be completed by the owners son (avionics) with repair side (dad) to do the EDM.  Son gave me a quote of $6500 to install a Garmin Audio panel.  I said NO, I had no interest in that and wanted the used intercom installed.  He said "I don't care to do an install of that generation and I HIGHLY recommend you do something newer".  I reached out to his dad and said I am canceling the EDM install based on your son's refusal to install the intercom.  I don't think that made the son happy.  He had my N-Number and contact information.  Whatever gets people through their day...

WTF… an anonymous call due to something administrative? Someone needs to find something better to do with their time.

It’s due to a complaint having been made.

I can’t quote Chapt and verse but the FAA must respond to a complaint, they have to put something in the file, so they made a call, logged that in the file and that was the end of it.

I’m sure they felt that it was a waste of their time too, but they can’t ignore a complaint.

I’d bet almost all of their activity is based on either complaints or accidents / incidents, very little comes from surveillance, thankfully we aren’t surveilled that much.

How many ramp checks have you had? I’ve only had one, but then I mostly fly to rural airports.

From what I’ve seen complaints are almost always using the FAA as a “weapon” as in the complainer has a beef with the complainant, I’ve seen some doozies between two different A&P’s based in the same area.

I'm sure the FAA guy is as annoyed as you are. It is his job to follow up on these things. I'm sure he has better things to do. At this point he probably likes you more than the guy who complained. I'm sure he knows what is going on here too, and you can get some comfort knowing that the FAA will probably be looking at the avionics shop with a finer point pencil than normal...
