A64Pilot Posted September 7, 2023 Report Posted September 7, 2023 This subject has come up a couple of times usually ref insurance. Interesting that it’s the fastest growing population, further evidence GA is dyeing it seems This copied from an Email "NAFI - How CFIs Can Evaluate Older Pilots to Keep Them Safe" Topic: The Fastest Growing Pilot Demographic Is Age 70+. Is There Such A Thing As An 'Average' Older Pilot? On Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at 19:00 Central Daylight Time (17:00 PDT; 18:00 MDT; 20:00 EDT; 14:00 HST; 16:00 AKDT; 17:00 Arizona; Thursday, September 21, 2023 00:00 GMT) Select Number: CE03123940 Description: The fastest growing population among pilots has been in the age group 70 years and older. We will discuss, “to what extent does age impact the performance of the average pilot, and is there such a thing as an average older pilot?” During this program, we will review how CFIs can focus efforts on improving the safety of flying by assisting the more than 200,000 pilots aged 60 years and older. CFIs can help aging pilots: Maintain proficiency Recognize cognitive and physiological deficiencies as they arise Regularly reevaluate their personal minimums Adjust flying to accommodate the inevitable changes that occur with aging If CFIs and older pilots do this together, we can continue to fly safely in our golden years. toto Posted September 7, 2023 Report Posted September 7, 2023 Thanks A64. I got the same email this morning and registered. Could be an interesting presentation. Quote
Jim Peace Posted September 17, 2023 Report Posted September 17, 2023 60 and older? There are 64 year old 747 pilots. There are 80 year old pilots that know a lot more and have better judgment than the wet ink CFI. Whatever. 1 Quote
MikeOH Posted September 17, 2023 Report Posted September 17, 2023 Is there ANY factual basis that shows "Older Pilots" are having more incidents/accidents than any other age cohort? Any insurance data? Any NTSB age correlated accident data? I'm really curious what, beyond speculation, drove the 'need' for this 'course'? Quote
toto Posted September 17, 2023 Report Posted September 17, 2023 I’ll just mention here that we had a thread earlier in the year about age-related insurance denials, with some good points raised by many. https://mooneyspace.com/topic/45566-pp-article-on-insurance-denials-for-older-pilots/ What any of that has to do with this particular course, I have no idea - but I’m interested in the topic generally. 1 Quote
RLCarter Posted September 17, 2023 Report Posted September 17, 2023 My current CFI-I which I’ve been flying with every Saturday (weather/maintenance permitting) for the past 4 yrs turned 90 this year. He renewed his CFI after I had been through 5 instructors while working on my commercial, and now we’re finishing up my initial CFI. He’s in really good shape (physical/mental) and can still perform all the maneuvers to ACS/PTS standards, the only thing he has passed me to another CFI for was my Night X-Country and Spin Training. We do local night flights for currency and sightseeing but the x-country was going to run past his (and my) bed time…lol. He also stays current in a Cessna 140 (tail wheel), so as long as he’s able we’re going flying. 2 Quote
