toto Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 Just saw this on Google News.. https://www.kcci.com/article/des-moines-international-airport-runway-closed-after-emergency-landing/44481406 I don’t know any details beyond what’s in the article. Quote
toto Posted July 9, 2023 Author Report Posted July 9, 2023 Also from AP https://apnews.com/article/des-moines-iowa-emergency-landing-airport-7cbf936d29b31235048e2299df669e58 Sounds like the pilot was having a gear problem and performed a planned gear-up after discussing with ATC. Curious what happened there. Quote
jetdriven Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 Dukes actuators have no back spring to fail. However the crank engage lever can be a little finicky to get the crank cable to engage. It will, you sometimes just have to mess with it a little to get it to engage Quote

1980Mooney Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 N201PL, a 1977 M20J Serial No 24-0284. Dukes Gear until Serial number 24-0377. In the video the landing gear are partially down. That probably creates the most damage in a gear up landing. In addition to prop, engine, belly gear doors, step, the landing gear connecting rods, turnbuckles, gear actuator and steering horn are overstressed and bent usually - they are all hard linked together - something has to give. A belly landing with gear fully up is much less damaging. No activity on FlightAware since 2021. Owner is 65 years old per internet. Probably headed to the scrap heap. 1 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 For those that followed the saga of my emergency extension cable, that is exactly the state my gear was in when my cable jammed. Except I was on jacks, not in the air. But for about 75 hours, that would have been my fate if I had to use the emergency extension. 3 Quote

kortopates Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 Looks like the pilot saved the flaps, but i agree that the valuation is likely way to low to not total. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote

N201MKTurbo Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 I think @1980Mooney nailed it. Nice landing for someone who hasn't flown much. But we don't know that. The pilot could fly a lot, all we know is the Mooney hasn't flown much. I would like to look at the maintenance history. Both landing gear systems failed. Considering that it hasn't flown much, did it just come out of annual? Quote
jetdriven Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 We don't know both failed. For all we know, the breaker tripped halfway down and the finicky lever wasn't engaged on the cable. Nobody ever practices this or understand how the system operates. 2 Quote

I was trying to get a PAPR yesterday with no success. I told the FAA guy it has to be in the database since you can see it on FlightAware. FAA guy says "Nope - even if it wasn't broadcasting, you may be able to see it on FlightAware." 1 Quote

If you are taking off from a towered airport with a brite display, they may be able to ID you, even if you don't get flight following. Are there any ATC on Mooneyspace? Quote
