M20JFlyer Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 Does any one know if the King 200 series and the newer King 140 series of Bendix/King..now Honeywell autopilots, use a Pittman Motor in the Servos. If you have had recent experience with needing service on a King/Bendix AP SERVO please PM me at the e-addres at the bottom of this message. The King 100 series does indeed use Pittman for the servo drive motor. This week I made contact with several BK service centers. All had less than happy news to share... if indeed the servo motor is not up to spec. Not up to spec does not mean your motor has quit but that the service center determined the servo's motor will not perform to standards. Would anyone who had this problem share what they were quoted as cost to repair the servo motor if a servo motor was the required repair????? Honeywell anticipates that over 10K perhaps as many as 20K BK, Allied Signal and Honeywell units averaging three servo's per unit are in use. ( this number is not a verified number) If you are flying an airplane with a BK autopilot and a servo motor were to become in-op your AP will quit. Has anyone recently experienced a KAP 100 series or King 200 series autopilot repair when the service required a servo motor repair? If you can share your experience with MooneySpace or PM me it would be appreciated. Pat Lyons N9135W plyons820@yahoo.com
pilot716 Posted March 3, 2012 Report Posted March 3, 2012 We had our pitch servo sent to autopilot central because we were getting a trim failure, the servo was over 20 years old, this pitch servo was refurbed for $1200 but.......we still have the continuing problem with the trim failure( the auto trim wont work) but the a/p on start up passes the start up test, hopefully during the annual it can be fixed. AP central does very good work, they of course did not originally diagnos the problem but only had to refurb the servo so I cant blame them. btw this is a KFC 150

M20JFlyer Posted March 3, 2012 Author Report Posted March 3, 2012 Pilot 716 and Aviator-Reb thanks for the comments. Autopilot Central in Tulsa is good people and they can tackle most any AP problem. But they don't repair Servo Motors they repair the electronics. Where I am going with this inquiry is to learn ..What a pilot is faced with if he learns the small motor in the servo has gone South. I am a member of a large flying group...about 50+ members in Houston TX area and have been hearing horror stories of replacement cost of the servo Motors. Three members have King AP's out of service because of Servo Motors and we are trying to learn of some one that will repair the very small Pittman Servo motors. We have some high tech NASA knowledge in limbo in Houston ... an one person .. looking at these Pittman Motors sez they are definetly repairable..but is not interesred in doing the FAA fight ..if there is no significant interest. (volume needing repair) Some of hese 20 year old motors will someday need some TLC and when that day comes {FOR YOU} hold on to your pocketbook unless we beging now to develop some plan. Mooneyspace guys an gals ...I am not tryin to be an alarmist... but if you want to get your heartbeat up call AP central in Tulsa or any BK service center... and request a new servo motor for your AP !!!!

M20JFlyer Posted March 4, 2012 Author Report Posted March 4, 2012 Aviator Reb: and all others flying behind a King 100 series AP and perhaps King 200 series AP I think I failed my English writing class-- in fact I know I failed. The numbers I indicated in my first post are the wild guess from a Honeywell Rep I spoke with. The Numbers(s) 10 or 20 thousand UNITS is the what Honeywell anticipates are the Units still flying in the American fleet, plus some number for the rest of the world. Most 100 and 200 series Bendix King UNITS have three servo's ...so approximately 30,000+ servo motors could be in service. My point with Honeywell: How the hell can you walk from 10 thousand customers...leaving them with an unclear picture of SERVICE for the Servo Motors of Approx Ten Thousand Customers. ( Aerostar,Beech, Cessna, Mooney, Piper, Aero Commander and ect..ect????? So My question for the SPACE is:: has anyone gotten a RECENT quote for a Bendix King servo motor repair or replacement ???? pilot716 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 You can try calling Mike at LV avionics located at hangar 7 KABE, he is extremely knowledgable and will point you in the correct direction..
M20JFlyer Posted March 4, 2012 Author Report Posted March 4, 2012 Aviator -Reb and 716 thanks for the contd. follow-up At present this does not to seem to be a very popular topic. When the fickle finger of fate points at anyone flying a 100 or possibly a 200 series K-AP perhaps WE THREE can recall this topic for Mooneyspace. It would be very interesting if someone other than me confirms what I got from AP central in Tulsa and other BK avionic shops ....I know Berry Sparks ( a good guy) so well at Tulsa He would probably recognise my voice. The message conveyed was next to impossible to believe...but I am not tryin to kill the messenger!!! If it is indeed true that Honeywell has walked then on to plan B... It sure has sparked little to NO interest on Mooney space to date. Thanks guys for your help Pat Lyons N9135W at KAXH Houston
Bigwoodselectric Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 Hi Pat, We are the only non-warranty repair station for Ametek/ Pittman for the past 2 plus years. Just this Last week we received our FAA Repair Station certificate to repair these Pittman servo motors that are used in aircraft. Our Repair Station number is 1BWR034C. Our company's website is www.bigwoodselectric.com. I hope this helps, Zach
KSMooniac Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 Zach, welcome to Mooneyspace and thanks for letting us know about your services. I'm flying with an STEC but am happy to learn of more support for our legacy fleet of aircraft. Congrats on earning your FAA Repair Station certificate.
