Mcstealth Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 https://www.flyingmag.com/the-short-run-of-the-burns-ba-42/ I am sure this has been posted here before, but I've not read about it nor seen one before. Cool stuff. 6 Quote
EricJ Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 Interesting! I'd never heard of that before. Quote
0TreeLemur Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 That interior upholstery belongs in a 70's van! 2 Quote
KSMooniac Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 This was news to me as well! It's been a long time since I read Bax's book with Al Mooney, but I don't recall any mention of it either. I only remember his post-Mooney career at Lockheed until he retired. Conceptually, I really like it. I'm curious about the wing attachment and the "ring spar" around the cabin. I wonder if it was comfortable on the inside, or very cramped. 2 Quote

That caught my attention also. Ring Spar made me say 'huh'? Quote

I'm imagining the wing spar transitions to a fuselage frame and does double-duty...but I'd sure love to see what it looks like! I'd like to see how the cabin floor is situated, and the systems routing as well. It might be tricky to get controls routed into a mid-wing, but Ted Smith sure figured it out. I imagine Al did as well. 1 Quote
aviatoreb Posted February 14, 2023 Report Posted February 14, 2023 WOW! What an interesting airplane! Of course Al Mooney had a hand in such an interesting design. I bet it was fantastic. Maybe that is the long fabled Mooney twin that shoulda been. 1 Quote

While I was reading the webpage I had this echoing in my head. Shag seats and roof have to be great sound dampening! ...can you say "Low drag, High shag!" 1 1 Quote
GeeBee Posted February 15, 2023 Report Posted February 15, 2023 It looks like an eastern bloc Aerostar! 1 Quote

BrianK Posted November 2, 2023 Report Posted November 2, 2023 (edited) My father worked on the BA-42 with Burns Aircraft in the early '70's first in Starkville, MS then to their larger building in Hattiesburg, MS. I believe they were building the second prototype at that time. Have lots of pictures stashed away somewhere of the facility and BA-42. Even had a few rides in it around Hattiesburg.
