hannaheck Posted October 28, 2022 Report Posted October 28, 2022 I'm looking for a Mooney mechanic in the St. Louis area who can repair a fuel tank leak. It is leaking fuel into the cockpit behind the captain's chair. Does anyone know of a mechanic who could help me fix it? Quote
mike_elliott Posted October 28, 2022 Report Posted October 28, 2022 Most likely you will simply need to tighten the inboard fuel sensor screws. Common issue as the planes age Remove the seat and the side carpet/panel and put eyes on your issue and go from there Quote

I believe it is higher up on the seal. It leaks only with a full tank of fuel on the left side. Quote
hannaheck Posted October 28, 2022 Author Report Posted October 28, 2022 Also, since the fuel only leaks while the tank is full does anyone know if it is safe to fly if the tank is not completely full? Quote
ilovecornfields Posted October 28, 2022 Report Posted October 28, 2022 Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this! Doctor: Well, then don’t do that. I’m not mechanically qualified enough to answer your question, but if your plane has zero problems when the tank isn’t full then I probably wouldn’t fill the tank. Ragsf15e Posted October 28, 2022 Report Posted October 28, 2022 If tightening the screw’s doesn’t work, you can move to changing the gasket there. We’ve got some threads around here on that… need @carusoam to find them though! Quote

Ragsf15e Posted October 28, 2022 Report Posted October 28, 2022 Here’s a few threads on this. Don’t over tighten if it’s the gasket. Quote

Mine has had a leak near the top nearly since I bought it. I know how much I can fill it without it leaking, and just leave it below that if I'm not about to fly it. I think a lot of Mooneys and other airplanes with wet wings are managed this way. The pilot determines the airworthiness of the airplane, so ultimately it's your decision. 1 Quote
tmo Posted October 31, 2022 Report Posted October 31, 2022 Eric, I think you just fixed my slight-seepage-when-right-tank-full-to-the-max 1 Quote
