Bolter Posted March 24, 2022 Report Posted March 24, 2022 (edited) This is mostly a question for our helpful friends at CAV. @CAV Ice I recently acquired a great Ovation with a nicely done Aspen Max panel (2 of 3 units with Extended Backup Battery). According to Aspen and their certifications, no backup instruments are required anymore. I still have a dual vacuum pump (engine mount and an electric unit in tail) that are only there for the backup AI. My only concern is what is required to keep the FIKI system legal. According to the FIKI TKS supplement, the dual vacuum system is not required if no backup AI is required. G1000 is given as an example, but it specifies any other panels that do not require a backup AI and vacuum system as in note 24 of 2A3, the Mooney Type certificate. Reading 2A3, note 24, it looks like Aspen's system meets the same requirements as the G1000 with respect to all this. By extension, I do not need the dual vacuum pumps powering a backup AI anymore. I should be able to shed a few pounds, conveniently front and rear for CG purposes. Edited March 24, 2022 by Bolter hit "post" too soon. Quote
ilovecornfields Posted March 24, 2022 Report Posted March 24, 2022 I think this has come up before with someone suggesting than an all electric airplane without the vacuum backups would lose FIKI certification according to the STC. That may be true, but I frankly don’t care. I’m sure the FAA will be way too busy addressing all the people worked up over the use of the word “learner” that they won’t have time to violate me for it. That and the fact that even with my FIKI plane I rarely go into “known ice.” 1 Quote
gdwinc Posted March 24, 2022 Report Posted March 24, 2022 I asked a similar question a while back. Here is that thread… 1 Quote
carusoam Posted March 24, 2022 Report Posted March 24, 2022 This issue will always come up… It follows the loose language we are discussing in the other thread…. Back in the day… You wanted two AIs and have them powered by independent power sources… We only had two independent power sources at the time… Electric and vaccuum… Surprise ! Vac is out… Second alternators are in… Second batteries to back them up… are in as well… individual batteries to support the individual instruments…. For icing on the cake! There was no way to see this coming… Reading and writing documents that cover unseen future changes…. Takes years of experience to get good at… Follow gdwinc’s reference above it has input from CAV the TKS people… All good news… just need to get up to speed with the changes in the language… Best regards, -a- Quote

I was trying to find this thread, too. I had a vague recollection of reading it before I had a FIKI plane, but was missing it in my search. -dan Quote
