Most carry what they need, but I have to tell you. I saw the Brightline ads some years back and thought to myself, "yet another overdesigned gadget for flying nerds". It has turned out to be the best purchase I have ever made.

Oh it is, and a call to 866GA-SECURE as well as the local sheriff went nowhere.

I thought felons were not allowed to possess firearms after release? Or is attempted murder not a felony??

I bought one when they first came out - one of the zippers went haywire after two years, when I was at Oshkosh I stopped by their booth to see if they could do anything with it - the rep worked on it for a couple minutes and decided he couldn't repair it and handed me a brand new bag.

I can't recommend the bag or these people enough - they are fantastic.

Getting back on topic, my darling wife gave me this flightbag [from Spruce, but I don't remember the name--Sky Bag?]. I really like the fold-down desk area when flying solo. Lots of little pockets, I can put the MP3 player and cord, cell phone charger, etc., in there and keep them all separate. [They are behind the piece of paper, but you can see my finger lite in a mesh pouch.]The main pouch will hold six or more sets of approach plates if you put them in binding-up so you can tell which one to grab.

The padded shoulder strap didn't make the photos. My only complaint is that the handles are aluminum, and it's easier to lay it down than stand it up, but I have to be careful when laying down on the wing or tail because I don't want the [very lightweight] metal handle to bang into my [thin] painted sheet metal! Guess I'll have to find a roll of that fun tape that only sticks to itself and wrap the grips, if only I could remember what it is called . . .

Yeah, that looks like it. I just don't want adhesive to ooze out over time and get all over my hand, the handles, the bag, my back seat, etc. Thanks, Mike!

HHhhmmmm.  Interesting discussion.  Iowa has had concealed carry permits available for those that wish to submit to a background check, pay the fee AND demonstrate competence with a handgun.  Timed fire, rapid fire and completion of test to demonstrate you understand the "shoot-don't shoot" scenario's and legal aspects that go along with the carry permit.  Statistics show that states that allow concealed carry have fewer assaults and deaths from gun violence.  I personally think being prepared/trained and NOT being a victim is the way to go.  If a situation doesn't "feel" right get out of it as quickly and quietly as possible...If you ever pull you better fire and shoot to kill...or leave it concealed.  I do NOT carry a firearm in my flightbag...ever.  I do often carry a couple of broken down SxS's in the baggage area.  A convicted felon MAY NOT own or possess a handgun...legally.

I don't have a flightbag. I leave everything I usually need in my airplane. But the 2 or at most 3 maps I flightplan with, and my pilot licence, as well as a wallet and a couple of blank cheques are in my jacket. I usually have a bottle of water and therefore the inevitable pee jug for the long flights ; )

Don't have a flightbag either - I've got a Filson briefcase that holds laptop, iPad and a few odds and ends (eg Jeppsen-Garmin card updater doohick, spare keys, license, wallet, etc) Everything else I need for flight is in the plane. Interesting discussion on the handgun thing. Here in Canada handguns are pretty rare. I shoot IPSC, and occasionally get an ATT (transport permit) to take my Sig with me to shoots, but it goes boxed and locked. I also fly floats in the bush, however, and a marine shotgun is always with me when I'm heading out to Lake Faraway. I've had more than a few frisky bear encounters over the years, and a couple of bangers goes a long way to reminding them just who is on the top end of the foodchain...
