Yariv Posted November 4, 2021 Report Posted November 4, 2021 Hi all, I bought a "nice" container for my sdcards to take them home each month for an update. The only issue with this container is that the cards are pressed into a tight space (soft material like sponge) and in the process of storing them the read-only protection tab (top left of the sdcard) got loose and fell off. I found it and managed to somehow re-insert it but now it is a bit flimsy. The replacement sd cards (TSO) are very expensive, at $105 each. I tried using an electric tape to hold the read/write protection tab in place but that was too sick for the G1000 MFD/PFD slots, although it worked fine in the PC card reader. Do I have to bite the bullet and buy these cards? any other creative ideas? Thank you, Yariv Quote

GeeBee Posted November 4, 2021 Report Posted November 4, 2021 I use standard 32gb Sandisk on the bottom and 16 on top. No problems. 1 Quote
PT20J Posted November 4, 2021 Report Posted November 4, 2021 They are just SDHC cards 8-32GB formatted FAT32. Don't use the larger SDXC cards; they're not compatible. Skip 1 Quote
Yariv Posted November 5, 2021 Author Report Posted November 5, 2021 Thank you all, I am convinced to get a regular SanDisk SD cards. Quote

Check with Garmin Support, I doubt you need to use a TSO'd SD Card. (Unless it is going in something other than a GA Mooney, if so, I have no clue.) But G Support told me that none of my Garmin products require it. Any good quality SD card will work just fine. Just get whatever size your current one is and you should be fine. (Guessing it is between 8GB and 32GB which is what all the G Manuals I've read indicate.) Quote

I did call Garmin and they confirmed that the MFD/PFD bottom SD cards are TSO because not like the top card in the G1000, they are used continuously by the G1000 during the flight. However, reading all the comments here I see that quite a few pilots are using regular SanDisk SD cards with no issues. I am leaning towards doing the same but I will also keep these old TSO SD cards just in case. Thank you. Quote

There is no hard-and-fast requirement to buy the Garmin-branded cards. I usually carry a spare set in a small hardened case, and format them in between each major revision to ensure I always have fresh data on a clean card. 1 Quote
