Dieselsnplanes Posted September 25, 2021 Report Posted September 25, 2021 I’ve searched for a bit and can’t get a solid lead. My F model has the sticky messy air filter and wanted a regular synthetic material replacement for it but I can’t seem to find one. Donaldson has every model but the E & F, and Aircraft spruce lists a paper pleated filter but doesn’t have any details on it. I don’t want the Challenger\KN filter as in motor sports they dust cylinders. Some part numbers or help would be great! Quote
MB65E Posted September 25, 2021 Report Posted September 25, 2021 Same issue. Donaldsons are nice. Cleanable element but not the sticky mess. I have a Challenger in mine now. The seals I feel are unsafe and I don’t install the seal anymore. I run the ram air most of the time and change the oil often. The entire intake on the airplane could be much nicer. This might be a really short thread! ;-) -Matt Quote
Dieselsnplanes Posted September 25, 2021 Author Report Posted September 25, 2021 Do you have the Donaldson part # or is it not available for F models. Quote
Guest Posted September 25, 2021 Report Posted September 25, 2021 As far as I know there are only two choices for the E and F models. The Brackett oiled foam and the K&N Challenger. The OEM hasn’t been available for years. Clarence Quote
MB65E Posted September 25, 2021 Report Posted September 25, 2021 For clarity, I was referring to the Donaldson as being a decent filter. Just not approved for the E/F. I’ve used them on 182s and such. -Matt Quote

I worry about it coming apart and getting ingested into the engine. Is this your concern about the OEM K&N gasket? I thought of making a new gasket from the reddish silicone (about 1/8" think) gasket material I purchased from Aircraft Spruce (such as what the Real Valve Cover gaskets are made from). What does the audience think of that substitution? John Breda Quote
MB65E Posted September 26, 2021 Report Posted September 26, 2021 Exactly my concern. I even ordered the new gasket. Self adhesive sticky back to the back of the filter. It should seal better than it does, but I don’t want to risk ingestion. I don’t want anything that need to be replaced behind the filter. If the bracket used about 1/2 the fluid they do that would actually be better I think. -Matt Quote
Guest Posted September 26, 2021 Report Posted September 26, 2021 There is an AD on certain Brackett air filters for replacement of the filter housing because they would allow the gaskets to be ingested by the engine. https://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgad.nsf/0/ED4848C66447B35686256A40006C6AFE?OpenDocument&Highlight=brackett Ive never seen an E or F with the original filter, they’ve been Brackett or K&N.
