Seems like every oil change I spend time looking for a few of the camlocs that have fallen onto the ground.  So far I have always been able to find them, but its just a matter of time until one gets away.  Can anyone give me the size of the M20M cowling camlocs (the larger and smaller ones) so that I can buy a few to have on hand?  Thanks!

I was wondering what is letting them get away?

They are supposed to be retained, making them difficult to escape capture…

keep your eyes open while ordering the new parts… you might be able to buy just the retainers…

What's letting them get way, is that the holes have worn and the retainers are no longer retained. Creativity with custom washers is in order.

I would get the skybolts, the wide flange will not wear through the fiberglass.

The Skybolt 2000 series used on the J's are far superior to the camloc 2000 series studs due to their wide flange.  However, I think we're looking at the 4000 series studs, AFAIK it's the grommet that matters, not the stud.  Skybolt does sell a wide flange grommet, though.

Here's what I bought from Aircraft Spruce, did the trick for me.

I have camloc spares in sizes 2, 3, 5 and 7. The ones that go into the intakes on the lower cowl are the ones that were problematic for me

The retaining washers can be a pain to install. I found bending them with a couple of pairs of needle nose pliers to open the gap helped with installation and then I bent them back flat. I'm sure there is an easier way to do this and am looking forward to hearing about it from our mechanically experienced friends.

For the places where the previous camlocs had pulled through the fiberglass I added a washer on the flange side and used a longer camloc. When I have my cowling repainted/reconditioned I'll be able to go back to the standard lengths.

Cheers,
Rick
