Your wing root seal is fashioned from duct tape. It’s a heavy duty outdoor type. It’s not like beech wings that use a silicone rubber gasket. The duct tape keeps water out. Over that goes the wing root fairing. Mine is aluminum and fastened by sheet metal screws. I know from experience - the paint shop I used didn’t tape or remove the fairing. They just stripped and sprayed with a power washer. The stripper dissolved my duct tape seal. Got water into my taped off cabin and caused mold. The worst was they wouldn’t fess up to it. Fortunately my avionics and wing spar didn’t get corroded but this was a setup for a potentially totaled aircraft. Paint stripper and water are a potentially dangerous mix - the paint shop needs to know what they’re doing. 1

And then this “speed mod” Which I believe is plastic. Cirrus has these as well and they are attached via double sided tape.
MooneyMitch Posted March 29, 2021 Report Posted March 29, 2021 Aircraft stripping/painting.....My experience of passing 3 Mooney airplanes through an aircraft painting facility, I removed any item that was fastened with a screw (windows were the exception). An E and my current D/C model had wing root fairings attached with screws. Old duct tape removed and area sealed prior to stripping. If my memory is correct, the R model wing fairings are riveted in place. Reason..... I did not want items painted in place due to future removal and having to break a paint seal......not attractive!
