I do like the turbo. However, I’m not convinced it’s worth the upgrade cost to add on.  It’d probably add $5k to the value and cost $25k to install.  I’d be looking for a 231 or a C with it already installed.

I don’t like math...

Too hard to bend the results to fit what is needed...

Unobtainable, need to find an airframe with it already installed.  The airframe STC no longer exists and because there is an STC there is no field approval (Catch-22).

I don’t think an STC would preclude a field approval. I believe most FSDOs won’t go to the trouble if an STC exists and will tell you to use the STC. If the STC is abandoned, the FSDO may be more prone to helping you out. I would at least call them and see if they will work with you to get it done.

There was a thread when this came up half a dozen times ago and somebody was advised that is the STC exists no field approval.  
 
I am not aware of anyone in the past 10+ years hanging one on a new airframe.  It isn’t like this topic doesn’t come up every couple of months. 
 
I certainly could be wrong but it certainly isn’t a cheap way to do things either given a fair amount of RayJay birds out there for sale. 
 
What I really want to find though are the performance numbers on Pug Pipers 400HP Comanche with a RayJay.  It was for sale a few years ago and I lost track.

Someone on here was/is selling a complete RaJay system. If you had that and a copy of the old STC, you would be in a good position to get a field approval. When I was at the maintenance seminar IA refresher a couple of years ago, the FAA had a session where they talked about this. They said that it was possible to do a field approval (one time STC) using an old STC as the approved data. They said that they will not do it to just save you money, but they did say they might do it if the STC was abandoned.

At one point John Breda was (not sure current status), again with enough money all things are possible.  Tom has said for $100-150K they could add the airframe STC to the engine one they have.  
 

So if you just want to argue that anything is possible you win. But for all practical purposes though, nobody is adding a RayJay to their plane.

We have Doc John selling a spare RayJay...

We have copies of the Mooney Mart STC...

We have the owner of the RayJay technology around here...

We have plenty of people that show interest in adding a RayJay...


Sounds a lot easier than it is...

Doesn’t have the complete performance attributes of a full TC’d engine with MP controller and intercooler...

Does sound interesting...
