daytonabch04 Posted July 12, 2020 Report Posted July 12, 2020 So I took my Bravo to an MSC to get an oil change and and the run up was notified the RPM on the Moritz is only working at high RPM/once warm. Haven’t had any issues in the past with it. Pulled back in the shop to diagnose and the sensor/plug is in the mag held with just a zip tie. The shop tried everything they could to fix the cable/sensor but have had no luck. RPMs will show on the Moritz once warmed up but nothing when low. With no replacement parts available, the MSC was willing to install a EI RPM gauge at no cost to me (since it wasn’t having issues prior tot the oil change). I’m waiting to get it back this week, but the MSC has done everything they can to make it work so now I’ll have a separate RPM garage and my clock moved over to the pax side. It’s a temporary fix but once one is gone on the Moritz it may start downhill. The could not figure out the issue with either the sensor/cable/or Moritz gauge itself But looks like I’ll now have a separate RPM reader for the Bravo. Is a JPI930 now in my future??? Quote

Unfortunately, the Moritz company left no forwarding address... However, if you act quickly... There is a set of Moritz gauges around here recently for sale... Don’t wait, I sense the price increasing... The Moritz were the ultimate analog and digital combination... the JPI or EI are even better... Collecting data for later review is all the rage. PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, and good luck! Best regards, -a- Quote
Cruiser Posted July 12, 2020 Report Posted July 12, 2020 is it the indicator gauge or the pickup sensor on the mag. Quote

I did want to replace with another Moritz but he couldn’t be positive it would fix the issue. Quote

carusoam Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Some of the pick-up sensors were the culprits for going bad... And they were really expensive too... Compared to every JPI and EI that essentially needs to do the same thing... Makes you want to build an owner supplied part for that... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a- Quote

Since the indicator works, i.e. it shows RPM after the engine warms up ? It would seem that part is working. Since the mags were worked, i.e. they were removed and serviced then reinstalled. It would be the most likely place to look for a problem. The pickup sensor is not part of the mag. It screws into a port and "picks up" magnetic signals from the rotation of the mag parts. It should be easy enough to remove this pickup and have it checked. These are third party parts purchased by Mooney. There should be a part number replacement in the parts manual for your air frame. flysamo Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 had tried to fix the moritz in my ovation, after 4 tries, put in a jpi 900 and problem fix Quote

Since the RPM issue couldn't get fixed, I had them pull the mags for inspection since the plane was already there.. Quote

thinwing Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 It’s a common Hall effect sensor on your right mag.I think that might be a slick part... Quote
Niko182 Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Might be the cable grounding on the engine block. That was what caused issues with mine. I wrapped mine with covering and the problem went away. 1 Quote

thinwing Posted July 14, 2020 Report Posted July 14, 2020 It’s a simple wire connection to the right magneto. The hall sensor used is common to other tachometers....you may have a simple broken wire under the heatshrink on the halls effect sensor screwed to the side or the right magneto. Quote
