Jim Peace Posted August 24, 2019 Report Posted August 24, 2019 running a GTN 650 with the Garmin 345. Position displays on the GTN with a transponder error message on there as well. I flew the plane last week and it worked great. No indications of an issue pending....I was not flying this trip but my friend said he recycled everything and no popped breakers... Thoughts? This 345 does not have the internal GPS...it gets it from the GTN Quote

kortopates Posted August 24, 2019 Report Posted August 24, 2019 Could be as simple as the GTX-345 came up before the GTN had a valid position due to blockage of the sky from perhaps a hangar. You’ll get the same message if you boot up in your hangar with out a clear view of the sky.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

Unfortunately, its only a general error message saying it doesn't have all the necessary data to create the ES data packet. A Garmin installer can run the GTX3X5 Install tool to quickly diagnose what is the real fault. But most commonly its the GPS position source data, but not always. If you just had the recent firmware update installed it could be a bad install of the firmware; but many possibilities. Quote

Maybe it was just a glitch. Tell me more please. Quote

An update to the GTN was done about 2 months and many many legs ago....I am going to go to the hangar tomorrow and pull it out and see if it duplicates itself..... Quote
Jim Peace Posted August 25, 2019 Author Report Posted August 25, 2019 This is what I get now: GTN position is accurate but unable to turn transponder on from the GTN Quote
EricJ Posted August 26, 2019 Report Posted August 26, 2019 Sounds like the link between the GPS and the transponder has failed. Quote
takair Posted August 27, 2019 Report Posted August 27, 2019 Jim, It could be as simple as what it says, a transponder failure. Very possible a chip failure. Even Garmin is not immune from random failures.... Quote
Jim Peace Posted August 27, 2019 Author Report Posted August 27, 2019 Garmin warrantee: 2 years or 800 flight hours from the date of purchase for new TSO remote-mount and TSO panel-mount products; hopefully they honor this when the time comes.....I think I am at 18 months now Quote
jaylw314 Posted August 27, 2019 Report Posted August 27, 2019 I don't know anything about the GTX 345, but it's curious it would fail to standby mode due to simply the loss of GPS connectivity. I would imagine it would fail to regular mode S if it had no valid position source, no? Quote

Also, if we can set up a time when you are at your aircraft, we can go through some of the TS steps. Also, if you are in the area....haha.....come by for a gander. I do have a place in GA I can send you to if need be. Quote
