DaV8or Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 In case anybody missed this one. Fortunately, no fatalities of serious property damage. It was a ferry flight after purchase and rebuilding. I suspect somebody didn't tighten something somewhere, but it's all speculation at this point. 231 Crash Quote
N33GG Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 Sometimes it is the luck of the draw. Looks like this one was lucky. Quote
rbridges Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 It said the plane had just been refurbished. That's really a shame. Glad the pilot was OK. Quote
sixsixX Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 I know the pilot, he ferried a cherokee for me, all said and done he put it down well. If you see the pictures. Sad to see one down but Reed did a great job and walked away. If anyone was faced with a forced landing this is the result to strive for. Quote
jlunseth Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 Looks like he tried the miracle turn, and did not quite succeed, but did a great job anyway. In the annals of crashes, this will be a nothing, since the only loss appears to have been the airplane. Quote
fantom Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 Quote: jlunseth Looks like he tried the miracle turn..... Quote
jlunseth Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 "The impact caused the small plane to begin a 180-degree spin, coming to rest in the trees about 30- to 40 feet away, with its nose pointing in the direction from which it had originated." Doubt the "impact" would do that. Thinking the pilot was trying. Quote
N33GG Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 If the reporting is correct... and the plane did a 180 on impact, and was then pointing at point of origin, logic would follow that the aircraft was heading directly away from the runway when it hit the ground. Not much of a turn, if the reporting is correct... Quote
N33GG Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 My only guess would be that it is highly unlikely that the reporting is complete and correct at this time... Quote
scottfromiowa Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 guessing you are right with that. Quote
Piloto Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Wonder what could have been the cause. It appears to be power loss on take off. They were lucky they were in a single had it been a twin the outcome could have been totaly different. It shows that Mooney do not need parachutes. José Quote
OR75 Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Many journalists / non-pilots don't understand aviation. I always find it interesting that after a crash they often report that the pilot did not have a flight plan. You know that they are thiniing that to the pilot did not know where he was going and what he was doing.\ Glad to hear the pilot was not hurt.  Quote
MooneyMitch Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 This is a great opportunity to help educate this young news reporter. From the photos shown, this could be compared to an auto fender bender type situation. With some articulate and correct education of this reporter, possibly an excellent follow up report could be aired on her news segment. A report that could enlighten her local viewers about the positive aspects of general aviation and how it does affect their community in a positive way. GA Serves America web site has wonderful information of what general aviation is and what it really does in the world. You are also welcome to use our multi-media general aviation educational videos which can be found on YouTube or on our web site, Mooney Ambassadors.com. Enlightenment and education of our local media reporters can help eradicate such phrases as "unbelievably" and the like. Anyone local with this incident willing to step up? Again, this is a great opportunity! John Pleisse Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Quote: JimR How'd you like how the news reporter said that "unbelievably", the pilot was uninjured, despite the fact that the aircraft "slammed" into a chain link fence? Slow news day, I suppose. Glad everyone is ok and the aircraft looks repairable. bnicolette Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Hard to say what happened but one thing is for sure;  this airplane flew quite a bit so whoever it was had to be pretty proficient: Flightaware I have to believe that it was some sort of engine trouble as the wx in Cleveland yesterday was pretty good.  Here is the wx for the arrival time in Cleveland, TN: 9:53 AM 81.0 °F 83.8 °F 68.0 °F 65% 29.86 in 10.0 mi Calm Calm - N/A  Clear Quote

Sabremech Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Can we educate these young news reporters as to what is a crash and what is a landing incident, aborted takeoff, etc? Quote

jetdriven Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Andf the fact the retracted gear gave hm more altitude in which to mahe more options. Oh and it belongs to the insurance company so worry only about your survivability rather than hull damage. Only a hotdog would say that. Quote: aviatoreb  ...or a late aborted takeoff for lots of reasons, or a very bad landing.
