Just wondering what the cost of adding it to the Aspen is.  Does it allow you to fly /G in the event of primary GPS failure?

I didn't realize it was an option - it's standard on the PFD and MFD 1000 installs, just absent on the MFD 500.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If it can still get way points from the failed panel GPS receiver, it should work for emergency navigation I would think?  I don't think it's a WAAS receiver though.

As was mentioned, the PFD1000 and MFD 1000 have it, but it is backup (emergency) and does not allow you to file /G without your primary IFR approved GPS.

I don't believe I have the antenna for the RMS.  I have the two antennas for the PFD and MFD.  I was just reading through the manual and saw the reference to the RMS GPS.

Built into the RMS (Remote Sensor Unit) is the GPS antenna.

The GPS receiver is part of that  sameantenna I think?  No separate one.  If you turn on your Aspen but not your panel GPS, the Aspen should annunciate RSM reversion at the bottom.

I was fiddling with it tonight.  When I killed my 430, the MFD GPS display froze.  The menu did not allow me to switch to another GPS source.  I looked at the aspen website, and it says that the backup GPS is optional.  Is it just available on the MFD 1000 and has to be unlocked?

The backup GPS is standard on the Aspen PFD and an option on the MFD. The backup GPS only comes into play if your panel mounted GPS fails with an ACTIVE flight plan loaded in it and has already transmitted to the Aspen.

Once it is in the Aspen, the flight plan will show up on your PFD and the heading to each of the waypoints will display as if your panel mounted GPS was still active. You cannot change it but you can navigate with it.

If you have a MFD 1000, you can port over the GPS function and flight plan through the reversion function.
