Tail Cone Access panel fastener

Has anyone replaced the side access panel fasteners (the panel you remove to gain access to the battery and such)  I'm looking for a good southco fastener number to replace mine.

Battery in the tail cone on the M20F?

I thought you might be looking for Dzus fasteners for the doors on the cowling.....That's where we kept the battery on the M20C.

Either way they are available in SS.

Thanks Vref - I'll check that out - love the package deals but wary on not being able to see what its made up of

carusoam - yep my battery is in the back. I've changed out the dzuz on the dipstick access door - the slots on the old ones had gotten so bad it took me an extra 5 minutes to open and close the door.  And the stainless looks good.

I'm going to do a bit more work - going to use stainless with the nylon wear cup for the fastener head - the hardware is available from aircraft spruce, I just didn't know the measurements - part number.   Oh well just going to have to go to the airport mid week.  looks like blue sky and center line winds tonight!!

When you are looking up parts, 2-0-100  is referenced in the mooney parts catalog as the fastener on the doors.  If I remember correctly, you will see this on the heads of the southco fasteners on your plane.

the other reference 82-32-101-17 is a reference to the split ring...

There are 23 sets...

Mike - did you ever come up with a part # for this?  It may have once been in the thread above, but something has been lost in migrating the website software.  I am looking to replace mine now with stainless ideally - they are corroded and ugly.

Available at Spruce, Southco #82 oval head series -100 should be the length.  You may find the length on one of your old studs. s1115-9 is the lock ring.

They make them in both Phillips Head and Slotted. I would recommend you use slotted. That way you can look and verify they are all locked, if the slots are aligned.

And definitely get the stainless!! I bought all the stuff individually for the tail cone and the cowling.

Don has a point but I went with phillips to help avoid screwdriver-slipping scratches. I run my fingers over the heads during preflight to see if any are loose. Just looking WOULD be easier though. They also sell a nifty little nylon cup-washer you can use to preserve the paint though they probably knock 0.1 kts off due to a bit more drag. Looks much better now. See before/after below.

There's also this.  Dimple and instal flush fasteners like Ovations have.  I have the tools to dimple it if you need them.  Its 2700-4 fasteners, and receptacles.  its kinda between sizes so I used .023 shins under the receptacles to space them slightly deeper to get them pure flush.  but its not hard work.

My O has the spring loaded hardware. If they aren't fastened properly, they stand out in a noticeable way.  I prefer the Phillips head style to avoid slipping and scratching.  But, Mooney used the slotted style anyways...

MILSPEC products fasteners have the unique trapped slot, the screw driver cant slip out. Anyways we maintain a 2002 O2 here, and I have copied a few things from it. They joke about my plane and cal it the Ovation Lite. Anyways one thing I copied  was the hell hole fasteners.  Another was the blade antennas. Baggage door fitment.  the fresh air. ..

On the cowl fasteners too. nd the belly screws.  Center the tool with one hand, turn with the other.

$20 for a tool to put split ring retainers on a handful of fasteners?  You'll get thrown out of the CB club if you admit things like that.  

I just replaced all of mine. I used needle nose pliers to remove the old retainers and my fingers to put the new ones on. I wouldn't want to do that every day but it's works ok for a small job.

Well you could also use a correctly sized deep socket I guess - I hadn't gotten my honorary membership to the cbc when I put it in the shopping cart - guess I was still mesmerized by being a new  plane owner....... my how things change !

That's what I have, too, but without the blue paint. Notice the lack of anything preventing the screwdriver from slipping out . . . I'd love to change to Phillips head, but not at the price they sell for! At least my belly is held on by 48 No. 8-3/4 Phillips head screws, and five No. 6s.
