Years ago I took data from my Generator-equipped C model using the Delco regulator then with the Zeftronics regulator.

To my eye your low max voltage could well be a faulty Delco regulator.

I put the Zeftronics in but still see the same low voltage. My A&P thinks it is the generator. It took Aircraft Spruce a few days to get one in but it will be installed tomorrow or Tuesday and then I will see. My suspicion is that it has been dying a slow death and now that I can actually see the numbers on the 830 I am aware of it. I considered upgrading to the Plane Power Alternator, but the last Generator lasted 19 years and about 1,400 hours so I'm willing to put in a $300 generator and hope for the same results.

I am seriously considering this conversion.

Is the Plane Power conversion the best way to go?  Can a conversion be done using the Zeftronics regulator instead of the Plane Power regulator?  Can the current drive belt be used or do you have to pull the prop to replace it?

How many hours are the brushes in an alternator good for?

Just got a call from the A&P. The generator is in and when they started the plane up it was showing 13.5 volts idling. They said it is back in the hangar along with all the necessary paperwork and a sticker for the log book. It's nice having a mechanic there on the field that can just get the plane, work on it, and put it away. Can't wait to get out and fly again!

I don't know the answers to you first few questions.

As for how long they are good for, my generator had 19 years and about 1,400 hours on it. If I can get that many more out of the one that just went in then it will be well worth the $300 in parts. I don't know how much the labor was, my A&P said the invoice was in the plane but he had told me 1-2 hours when he gave me the estimate.

If going with the crowd makes sense...

Plane Power alternators are popular updates around here.

Zeftronics VRs are quite popular as well.

They are so modern compared to the original parts.
