My IA is in the process of getting my new to me C in tip top shape. I'm trying to do all the leg work of ordering parts / overhauls to keep him busy replacing parts. I need some welding work done on my exhaust heat exchanger cover as it has a crack. Planning on calling some exhaust shops Monday but was wondering if the MS members had any recommendations.

Also need to have my Stewart Warner oil cooler overhauled. Send it back to the company, now called Meggitt Control Systems?  Use another approved source?

I'd like quality work for a fair price.

There are a couple of welding shops mentioned around here.  I think I recall knisely being one.  Good or bad, I don't recall.

If you are hands on, do some reading regarding CO and heat exchangers.  As in carbon monoxide, poisoning, and detectors...

Do a search on oil cooler overhaul.  See what falls out of That as well...  it has been done before...

Wayne at Pacific oil cooler. In SoCal.  Send the vernotherm too.

Any good hot rod shop should be able to weld the exhaust shroud.

If it's a small crack in the shroud, I would just stop drill it. It's not that critical.

+1 on Matt's vernatherm suggestion.

A good cleaning of the oil heatexchanger can work well too. Internal and external.  How do the cooling fins Look?

Cooling fins look like new. Bracket is broken. In my install the air intake hose runs very close to the oil cooler and the heat exchanger cover is rubbing against a stand off plate mounted to the back of the oil cooler. Not sure if that plate is normally used behind the oil cooler on C models to control the efficiency of the unit?  In this case the vibration of the exhaust to oil cooler caused the failure.

I'd like the shop to reweld the heat exchanger air intake at a different angle to give some extra space but remain clear of the exhaust crossover tubes and fix the crack.

The picture below shows the limited clearance with the 1.2 inch spacer removed (plate directly on top of the cooler)IMG_0483.thumb.JPG.8088ec165c981235b724b907864ba169.JPG

Have a look at other Cs... the plate is there to keep things from accidentally blocking airflow out the back.  Everyone recognizes blocking in the front. In the back, it's both harder to understand and harder to even see if it is happening...

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic...

Thanks for the suggestion, Wayne was great on the phone and I shipped the unit off to him this afternoon.
