The low flying stuff with a Seaplane is normal ops...flying into a narrow box canyon into steeply rising terrain is not!...a real bad mistake...I wonder if he forgot where he was and expected to follow that canyon out to a wider part of lake.Unfortunately turning into either of those canyons shown on the Topo at low altitude would yield the same results...to narrow to turn around and to steep at the end to outclimb.....he had two choices ...pull power back and land best he can or power back and pull the CAPs.It looks like he choose a third option ,steep banked turn trying to 180 backout

Hey watch this chandelle....

This from the guy who designed Steve Fossets Global flyer...he was even involved with flight test...designed the space plane that won the 10 mil Ansari prize....Than augers in pulling dumb low level hot dogging that every seaplane cfi warns against!

NTSB initial probable cause just out..basically stating the obvious after witness and onboard flight recorder review...he flew into a canyon while low and slow and struck terrain trying to fly out....that white rectangle in photo by the way is the roof of an anchored floating porta pottie....this wasn't a botched potty stop was it?
