So I really don't want to do Garmin and I really like the fact that I can do ADSB in on my phone with a $100 Strautx thing( I think technology should be cheap).    So Aspen needs a GPS source right?   Why could I not have say a Freeflight Ranger system with WAAS as the source?   Looks like it should be ARINC 429.  I sent an email to Freeflight to see what they have for ARINC 429 output.  No one really makes this easy to understand.

My name in the limelight!

I agree the whole ADS-B thing is confusing. Even for guys like me that try to stay on top of what is going on.

You don't need an Aspen at all. If you buy a FreeFlight WAAS ADS-B box, you will transmit the required "out" signal for the mandate. You just won't get the benefit of displaying the "in" on a panel mounted display. If you don't care about a panel mounted display, then using a FreeFlight WAAS ADS-B box with a portable ADS-B "in" box will allow full TIS-B (traffic) to trigger on your portable unit. You will always get FIS-B (weather) whether or not you have the "out" signal transmitting.

I'm not sure if you have an Aspen already. If you do, going with the FreeFlight will cost you the unlock code for the Aspen. Last I heard it was a lot of $. I would look into the Aspen version of the FreeFlight product. There is some sort of OEM deal going on between them and Aspen won't charge you for the unlock code of the Aspen labeled FreeFlight box.

As for your question, yes if you do buy an ADS-B box with the WAAS GPS, you would be compliant for the 2020 mandate. You would also be able to get the ADS-B "in" on your Aspen but the real value if you have both an MFD along with the PFD. The PFD will display traffic and weather on the mini map, but I don't think the METARs and TAFs are displayed on the PFD, only the MFD.

If you don't have an Aspen but are considering one, having a full WAAS GPS would give you both the LPV and ILS capability of the box. Otherwise, if you are VOR/ILS radio only equipped, you would still be able to show both signals on the Aspen.

Here is a picture showing the GPS signal on the PFD and the second Nav radio's VOR signal on the right. If I am flying to an airport with both an ILS and LPV, I can configure both HSIs to display their navigation data for each.
