Houman Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Hi, I have gone trough most of the stuff about AOA in the forums here, several articles on the web and looking at my different options and possible vendors, I'm about to go ahead and buy a CYA100 from Aircraft Spruce and have it installed by my mechanic, because of it's price, fact that I can have the installation done on an access panel under the wing and no holes in my wing, no tubes to pass, only wires, also display seems very easy to understand and installation seems easy. Before spending the 1 to 1.5 AMU for purchase and installation, I would really like any new pirep on this, I'm thinking of placing the led indicator under the compass since I don't see where else on my panel I can put it and have it very visible during turns, approch and flare... Also, would I be better to have this installed by my A&P mechanic or an avionics guy, since it will need to be connected to my power bus and ideally audio pannel. Thanks ! Quote
KSMooniac Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 There have been a few favorable PIREPS posted on this site I believe. I doubt it matters if you get an A&P or avionics tech to install it...pretty straight-forward with nothing exotic. I just installed an Alpha Systems AOA and there is nothing difficult, just tedious to route everything and find a place for their interface module. The CYA system would be much easier.. The creator of the CYA has posted here in the past, and a lot at Beechtalk if you want to go read more. Quote
Houman Posted September 10, 2015 Author Report Posted September 10, 2015 Thanks, I have gone trough the posts about CYA100 here, I do still have a beechtalk membership, but have not looked in there since getting rid of my rented Beech Sundowner and bought the Rocket, Quote
carusoam Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Look for photos on how people mounted the visual display... i believe... bennet went with a mount up by the compass. Really nice spot to be looking out the windshield and AOA indicator at the same time. bob has a nice photo of where it is mounted in his super modern IP. check their galleries for photos... best regards, -a- Quote

I decided to mount the sensor per the strictest reading of the installation guidelines, forward of the access panel to be sure it was in front of disturbed air. I installed the display right in front of me, beside the ASI. The display is very narrow and can be fit almost anywhere. (I removed the access panels and pulled the wire. My A&P drilled the holes and the panel cutout, did the soldering, and added the CB. I think my all in cost was about $750, $625 to ASpruce, a couple of hours of install. I like it very much. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/album/14075-cya-aoa/ Quote

gsxrpilot Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Bob and Marauder, I'm very interested in EXACTLY where the vane is mounted. Did you mount it in an inspection panel and if so which one. I'd love a good picture showing where it is in relation to the wing/gear/tiedown/etc. and also where in relation to the leading edge. I've still not got mine working and I keep getting told it's in the wrong location under the wing... I'm skeptical and thing it might be a problem with the wiring, but want to verify. Thanks! Quote
Marauder Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Bob's vane is on his right wing. Mine is on the left side attached to an inspection panel. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Marauder Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 There are some pictures on this thread: http://mooneyspace.com/topic/15015-cya-100-aoa-updated-pirep-by-request/#comment-205815 Quote

If you get a chance, next time you're at your plane, could you count and tell me exactly which inspection panel you used? Thanks, Quote

It is between the pitot drain and inboard of the left main near the leading edge. Quote
Houman Posted September 10, 2015 Author Report Posted September 10, 2015 Wilco. I have a picture around here somewhere but can't find it. It is between the pitot drain and inboard of the left main near the leading edge. yeah I would like to know as well exactly which access panel... I guess wiring is easier if on the left wing or will it matter ? I am wondering if I should put the led indicator directly on the glare shield, maybe cut it on the edge and put it horizontally... Not sure if that would work... I kind of have trouble seeing where I can put it on my panel in front of me beside between 2 instruments... Any suggestions from those who have installed it already ? KSMooniac Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 In my opinion, glareshield mounting is optimal since you can better reference it with peripheral vision "up there" vs. getting lost in the panel. I strongly considered the CYA unit and planned to make a little bracket or housing that looks nice and install it right on top, directly over the oil gauges. Quote
Bob_Belville Posted September 11, 2015 Report Posted September 11, 2015 (edited) My sensor is installed in the right wing exactly as far out as the stall warning sensor is on the left wing. Edited November 7, 2015 by Bob_Belville Quote
Bennett Posted September 11, 2015 Report Posted September 11, 2015 Left wing inspection plate. Indicator next to compass. Quote
gsxrpilot Posted September 11, 2015 Report Posted September 11, 2015 Thanks Bob. Can I ask who did your install? Quote
Houman Posted September 11, 2015 Author Report Posted September 11, 2015 Left wing inspection plate. Indicator next to compass. Is the inspection plate not too far aft for the installation or is it the case that the calibration makes it work anyway ? Quote
wishboneash Posted September 11, 2015 Report Posted September 11, 2015 I have some pictures on this site (see below). The wiring has been improved from the pictures shown here. I have a 1A circuit breaker which I use to turn it off while taxiing since it might make give off the audio warning if there is insufficient airflow. I turn it on as part of the take-off checklist.
