I received the following email from the airport manager at KGTU

Effective at 8:00 A.M., on September 10, 2015, the Self-Service 100LL Avgas pump price was adjusted from $3.60 to $3.45 per gallon.

I've got to fly more!  It's been a while since fuel prices were this low.

Any chance you would post the e-mail so I could show it to the Airport Manager at Castroville, TX  (KCVB) to show them how they need to stay competitive with other area airports are charging?

Thanks

Makes you really wonder when you look at some places and they are still over $6 a gallon.

I think a lot of these airports buy in bid lots. Lock in a number of gallons at a certain price and then need to sell off the inventory to buy the next bid lot at a lower price. The rest who are doing high volumes, at bigger airports are just gouging.

Small rural airports really struggle with this.  They need to be able to buy an entire truckload to get a good price.  At the same time some of the fuel suppliers contracts will not allow the FBO to keep the fuel in their storage tank for more than 6 months.  Our fuel contract with Chevron came up for renewal last year.  They had been giving us 1 year to sell the tank, but with the new contract they cut that down to six months.  After much negotiation and searching we finally found a different supplier who would still give us 1 year to sell it.

I understand.  At my home airport we buy about 4,000 gallons every 6 months.  Same issue as another said we need to buy every 6 months or we have to get some type of inspection on the fuel system.  We are private and the fuel is for club members only so we keep the price very close to cost.

I think most are running high enough volumes and they are taking advantage of the situation because the higher prices are generally at the larger airports.

Lowest close to home is VCB at 3.96 home is still 4.80 but since I fly an early Mooney I never seem to need that much fuel. Today I had to work real hard to get it to take 20 gallons

I was paying about 4 bucks down in Ga, but its still over 6 at my home field.  Getting better about finding cheap gas, Foreflight actually helps quite a bit in that regard.

With refining around Houston.  You would think the prices would be lower here.  Unless the Chevron Mississippi refinery is where FL get their fix from

It's all about taxes. New Jersey still has no self-serve stations, yet even with the labor of having somebody put gas in your tank the state still has lower gas prices than many others due to a lower gas tax.

Come to NJ with your plane...

you can choose to fill it yourself or have somebody else do it for the full service price.

our lowest price can usually be seen at Central Jersey airport.  47N

the self serve rule for cars does not apply to planes or specialty cars with nice paint.

best regards,

Go figure that self serving a plane, which involves using a pump that has no automatic overflow shutoff, is allowed yet self-serve auto gas is against the law, even with all the safeguards.

That's because the Aircraft Linemen have a weak union. NJ is a hotbed of unioneers and supporters. So is WV. I'm so glad to be back in the South!

I thought WV was in the South.  :)
