Scooter Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 Anybody upgrading their panel to the new Garmin glass or that is getting rid of a 430W I would be interested in talking to you. I am currently in the market for a 430W. Redoing the interior of the M20C. Let me know. Quote
jmills Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Just a thought, but if a person upgrades their panel to glass, they still need their nav-com as the glass is just a six-pack replacement (coupled with a moving map). Quote
Scooter Posted September 17, 2010 Author Report Posted September 17, 2010 Yea, but I was hoping that they would go with a full 1000 or something and want to get rid of it. Just a thought. I saw one on Barnstormers and it ended up being a scam for 3990. Just like the American dream wanting something for nothing. As much as I have put into the upgrade it is hard to justify 7 AMU for a nav/com system. Already have two new coms so don't really need the com and have a tablet so the 430 was to be primary nav and the tablet back up. Quote
DaV8or Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Many months ago I was looking at used 430 prices and they seemed to only trend maybe 10% less than new price. This makes sense because the 430W is very much in demand. I think it is now the prefered radio, even over the 530W. With the trend towards the G500/600 and the Aspen, the 430W takes up less panel space than the 530. Fortunately, I didn't have to buy one, but I came to the conclusion that for me, used wasn't worth it. I would just try to get a good deal on a new one and get the latest software and a full warranty. Quote
Jeff_S Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Can you actually do a retrofit with a G1000? I thought that was OEM only but I could be wrong about that. Quote
KSMooniac Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 There are some heavy iron retrofit applications for the G1000, like King Airs and I think some Citations I just read, but nothing in the piston world. "Deals" on 430W units are few and far between. You might get cozy with your favorite avioinics shop and see if you can get them to find a refurb unit directly from Garmin if you want to save a few bucks. Quote
fantom Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Give Bill at Sarasota Avionics 888-289-0997 x104 a call to get a good idea of the current market. http://www.sarasotaavionics.com/product.aspx?id=34 Tell him hello from me and I'll get a commission Quote
Scooter Posted September 18, 2010 Author Report Posted September 18, 2010 Thanks everybody for the knowledge and the reply's. It just looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and do it if I want that kind of gps. Quote

Barry Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 I've seen the non-waas go for a llittle over $3K, at times ... Quote
flyboy0681 Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 While on the subject of the 430/530 family, these units are now about 10 years old. Does anybody know if Garmin is working on follow up products or the next generation? Quote
OR75 Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 I would be thinking that follow up for Garmin or King wouyld be a unit that is a combination of GPS + WAAS + ADS-B out and in Slide in replacement would be perfect. I hope it is doable and that I am not the first one to have thought about it. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 One of my wishes would be to offer COM as an option or not at all. I'm sure the integrated radio of the 430 adds a few grand to the price and the M20J already has two reliable radios, so to me it would just be a waste. Quote
KSMooniac Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 There is such a thing as a no-comm GNS-400 or 420 or something. Hardly anyone buys them, though. I'd rather have the integrated box to reduce the number of installed boxes, and to save weight/panel space. I know for a fact that Garmin has been working on the replacement GPS navigators, but I don't know when they'll hit the street. I suspect it will be about the time that King finally gets their box to market, and it will be obsoleted immediately. Quote

If you really want to stay with the old radios, here it is: http://www.sarasotaavionics.com/product.aspx?id=722 Whatever, and whenever, an upgraded box is available, it will cost more, the me-first lines will be long, and you should really look at the type of flying you expect to be doing, before you start waiting for an unknown. The 430W is an exceptionally capable box. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 I have to admit I never knew about the 400W. The price difference between the two, $1,800, is small enough to go with the 430W and get rid of one of my KX155's. I would have thought the difference would be at least 3 grand. Thanks for the heads up Gary. Quote
