Vintage Mooney Paint

I am planning to paint my 69F soon.   I am thinking about an original scheme in blue, or a Ovation scheme.  What do you think?

 

I have attached an original 69 Mooney ad for reference.

I don't like it when I see older Mooneys with latest style Mooney paint schemes.

 

I prefer when I see a brand new shiny paint job in some other paint scheme, perhaps a classic paint scheme.

It's hard to beat the vintage scheme. We have a 70C, though, with a newer paint scheme, and we love it. Here's a pic, just to give you an idea. If/when I have to repaint the plane someday, I'm doing it exactly the same way.

I think it would be nice to see your Mooney as it is now that will help the gallery spend your AMU's I admit I've never been a fan of the F model double window and so plus 1 on Caro's point on the window conversion. As for vintage with a modern paint design I think it all depends on how it's done. Paint is about the most subjective thing you can do and depends on ones personal preference. There are some great looking vintage birds with modern paint. What a fun project to have.

I used Scheme Designers. It is good to see it before it's on your plane. They submitted about 25 layouts before we got it. A lousy scheme costs the same to paint as a good one.

Or do something original like the member here whose plane is painted red, white & blue like the Texas flag, or the ones who paint their planes in honor of particular warbirds. Or even the paint job put on my own plane two owners ago . . .

These vintage schemes are at least different from the overwhelming number of Mooneys that are color on the bottom, white on top, with a straight dividing line of thin gold stripes.

Done well, most paint jobs look good. Spend money getting a well done job, whatever scheme or design you settle on. I'm thinking about nose art, but am cowardly,enough that I may go with a wrap instead of painting it on. If I could ever settle on just one that I like!

There used to be a Mooney over at New Braunfels (I think) that had nose art that said "The Mooney Pit".  If I had thought of it, I would have put it on my Mooneys!  It always cracked me up when I looked at it.

Living here in the south...I say just do a Confederate Flag theme just to stir the pot some more..lol. 

 

Whatever design you decide just pick a quality shop. I had mine done in Mena and they were fantastic to work with and had it done in less than three weeks. I like the new modern schemes, but it seems like that's the same design everyone has been using lately (including me). After looking at the pics you posted I think a sharp vintage paint scheme would look awesome. You could also get real vintage like below. This paint job would get lots of attention...

If you have the original windscreen I would go original. That f with the green stripes is as cool as it gets. If you have the 201 I would do something more modern. I have never liked the vintage paint with a 201 windscreen. I liked lot the early J paint jobs, they would look good too.

Well you could have opened a large can of worms here.

but I want it modern, hey, older Mooneys have glass panels don't they?

 

The old paint reminds me of the Leave it to Beaver show, I don't know why, but it just does.

Unless you are going for a restoration to that period I think old designs are just that ,dated.

 

I kind of think there should be a stylized letter on the tail , like the O on the ovation , the A on the Acclaim. So I want a large stylized E on my tail.

 

I also think no one is pushing the paint to the max, as they do in the auto painting field. I would like a fade from black to red on the bottom half and a fade from red to black on the top half. (front to back). And I have yet to see a metal flake, even a small one (.004). I would like a large flake.

And of course there is the choice of Pearl,or even color shifting chameleon.

 

Now call me crazy, I know you will , but review some of these allkandy youtube videos. I am amazed at the depth of the color under the wet-wet clearcoat.

I never really thought of it and as a rule I'm not a big fan of metal flake but the more I think about it a three or four color metal flake with deep clear coat on a Mooney would look amazing if done right.  I imagine it would cost you some usable load you can sign me up for the crazy train as well.

lucky thing I could never afford such a thing.  I suppose there are reasons beyond our understanding why some of us don't have more money than sense.

Well, boney, my plane has some metal flake on it, but it's certainly neither all-metallic nor the all wet look like the cars posted above. Going back from the cockpit, the first two have some metallic. I wish all of them did, but I'm far too much of a CB to repaint while it's still in good shape!

I'll be repainting my E soon too.  It's something I've been thinking about and wanting to do for 2 years now.  I decided that this is a distinctly 60's airplane and a new style job of wispy airstream lines just doesn't add anything.  A vintage style paint job on an old airplane is really more than the sum of its parts style wise, but that doesn't mean it has to be an exact "original" job from Mooney.  My only problem with the original is too much white; I want more of the airplane colored.  After going through lots of extravagant ideas I think I found what I will do.  It is similar to the original but covers a little more of the airplane in color than white.  I spend a lot of time in warm areas so I still want the top of cabin and fuel tanks to be white.
