MooneyBob Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 I am in the middle of refreshing the interior on my 1977 J. All new carpet, side panels and painted plastic, probably. Where can I get new place cards ? Some of my windows are milky. Is it something that can be improved by polishing the outside surfaces of the plexiglass? The stuff they use to polish auto headlights maybe? Thank you. Quote
carusoam Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Siri respelled the word 'placard' for Bob... Consider swapping out the old for some new windows... The side windows are relatively low cost compared to putting in the effort to refurbish them... New solar gray would look really nice on her... http://www.planeplastics.com/airplanes/mooney/ Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
helitim Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 I recently completed replacing all my windows. Total of 41 hours of labor to complete the project. Probably 3 or 4 of those were spent R&R' ing the interior which you now have out. It's not a difficult job but, definitely time consuming. I went with the thicker 1/4inch and the plane is distinctly quiter now. One mistake I made was not spending the few extra $ for the UV protected glass. Even if your plane is hangared, the UV protection for you as pilot while you fly is worthwhile IMHO. Tim 1 Quote
Yetti Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Following this thread with interest.  Currently redoing my interior.   My side windows are fine, but the front is a bit milky. I have the 3 part Novus cleaning kit so I will let you know how it goes on the front window.  I pulled off some of the plastic panels and painted with Rustolum Nickle Silver and they look pretty sharp. The carpet is out and cleaning the glued down foam off the floor.   I bought the windlace off ebay for the baggage compartment  http://www.ebay.com/itm/STITCHED-HEADLINER-WINDLACE-FORD-FALCON-CHRYSLER-GM-CHEVROLET-GREY-GRAY-/111623914977?vxp=mtr  7 feet and an hour standing over the plane will do you. 1 Quote
Yetti Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 for the rear baggage placard, I just taped over it and painted.   My wife just bought a vinyl printer so I will probably remake some of the placards with it.  I think spruce or Chief has the full set of placards. 1 Quote
BillC Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 I got my placards from Aerographics in Colorado. Very nice people and fast shipping. A few were the wrong size so it might be best to measure the old ones and tell them the size you need to be safe. Also, I never had any luck buffing my windows. After hours of trying I got new ones in 1/4". Well worth the price and effort. Good luck, Bill Quote
CaptRJM Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 I second the glass replacement. Â If you have the whole interior out this is the time to replace the glass. Â None of the products will clean up milky or crazed glass, they are meant for polishing out scratches. Â Your glass is 38 years old and is probably brittle. Â Don't just replace the windscreen .... if you do, it will make all the remaining glass look terrible. Â I replaced my glass with 1/4" solar grey from Great Lakes Aero. Â Fit was excellent and very little trimming was required. Â My AP and I did the whole job in 2 1/2 days. Quote
Mike A Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 http://www.higher-graphics.com/Â has an extensive list of placards 1 Quote
Two Oh One Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 As several others have mentioned, the milkiness is probably an internal flaw due to age and won't be going away. If your previous owner used paper towels on the windows as mine did, you can polish a lot of that haze out with Flitz on a foam pad. It will give you some improvement as you wait on the funds or timing for new windows.. Quote
ryoder Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Try a porter cable random orbital and a heavy cutting pad and some polishing compund first. Might help but go aggressive on the cut. Quote
PTK Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 Yetti, did you come across any source for leather covered windlace ? Quote
Randy_B Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 I am in the middle of doing the same thing. A few new interior panels and new acrylic all around. Bob it looks like you are fairly deep into your plane. I would say go for the new acrylic now. You won't want to go back latter. After talking with Great Lakes Aero, I went with the Gray (W/G) that Mooney is currently using. Replacing the windows is a lot of work. I have never scraped so much sealant. Â 2 Quote
Yetti Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 Yetti, did you come across any source for leather covered windlace ? I was OK with the cloth so went with it.  You may ping the ebay link and see if he can do it. I am thinking of buying a leather hide and some alum sheet to redo the lower carpet panels.  Can't beat the smell of leather.
