I am planning on going Friday afternoon for the Saturday show..

Curious how a C model will do on taxing and parking in the grass?  Too many ruts? is there a way to get hard surface parking?  Is it a non-event?

If I go on Friday can I just get a car and not pay the show fee if I leave right away for a hotel?

And on Sunday when I leave can I get away with not paying as well?  Will be just going to the plane and leaving....

Jim,

Taxing on grass with my B last year was no problem. Heads up... You will need tie downs for the grass or you have to buy them. I kept mine from last year and hope to use them this year if my tanks are done. I just called him and he said they are working diligently on them. :) Hell, It's only been 3 months :( I hate being in this position Bent over :). Thanks for listening. Troy

I had a really long taxi and parking on grass at Oshkosh with my J. It was bouncy and at times made me mentally visualize a prop strike but it was fine. Just try to avoid stopping but taxi slower rhan usual. You'll be fine.

I flew into SNF a couple of years ago. Followed a gaggle of bobbing and weaving RVs from Lake Parker, and on short final was instructed "Red & white Mooney, sidestep to Runway 9R, the wide runway" then had the privilege of flying 5000+ feet down the runway past the intersection before I could finally land. Taxied all the way back to the approach end of 9, into the grass and over to GAC Camping. No problems.

Just don't get in a hurry and you'll do fine. I occasionally visit grass fields too. It will take more power, and be generous with Up yoke.

Your Mooney has 10" prop to ground, and your shock discs won't compress much while taxiing. Your Vette has less ground clearance, and gets worse gas mileage.

Jim,

Not an issue. Take your time, hold the yoke aft. Bring tie downs. For parking, consider three plywood squares (or some cheap Walmart kitchen cutting boards) to put under your wheels to help prevent sinking into the grass should it get a little wet. Haven't been to SnF, but OSH many times (231 and V-tail).

Don't fear the grass, but keep your head up and eyeballs out. Enjoy the show!

The grass won't get you, the ground hog holes will. Still remember the insignificant indentation on the taxiway that caught Bob Belville.

The FBO has paved parking and it's been around $25. They used to have a shuttle to the other side but one should probably check with them. Cab can be ~$10 each way per person. There is some paved parking at S-n-F, but usually for twins. We've seen people stop their planes and push them onto the grass (a several person job!).

Looking for a ride to Sun n Fun from Roanoke, Va. I took Thursday and Friday off and I found out tonight my plane will not be ready. Thanks. Troy

I'll drive the Vette but parking in the grass is still an issue with ground clearance.

I remember the first rx7's, some were burned up when parked on grass. The rotary's exhaust was unshielded and very hot. It would dry out, then ignite the grass. They fixed that in short order, thanks to the legal system.

As Mike recalls I parked my old M20E in the vintage section @ KLAL. Just be careful. I based my 1st E for a while on a grass strip field. I got in the habit of pulling the yoke back into my gut and grabbing the shaft at the panel to keep it back as I taxied. Might help some.

I hope to come down this year. Ideally with a buddy who has camping equipment to spend a night or two on the field for the whole experience.

Low slung cars are just as dangerous on the grass as many airplanes. One year a car started a grass fire in the parking area.
