Sabremech Posted May 6, 2015 Author Report Posted May 6, 2015 Here's a few pictures of the new baffling being fit to the cowling. I have to wait for the new parts to come in for the front baffling to be completed. David 2 Quote
Sabremech Posted May 31, 2015 Author Report Posted May 31, 2015 It's been a little while since I posted an update. I'll be going to the fiberglass shop this week to approve the plug and then the mold will be made as well as 2 sets of parts. In the mean time, I've been working on the air filter mounting and the top cowling baffle seal area. I've mounted a K&N air filter in the left forward baffle and installed a duct to adapt from the air filter to the carb air box. On the top cowling, I'm installing a .025 piece of aluminum over the stiffeners to give the baffle seals a nice flat surface to contact and seal tightly. I'll see how this works and decide if it will be part of the STC. If you're in need of gear pre load tools, I have 14 sets in stock. Check out my website www.gdsaero.com for details. Thank you, David 1 Quote
carusoam Posted May 31, 2015 Report Posted May 31, 2015 For anyone challenged with the copy/paste... http://www.gdsaero.com/vintage-airworks/ The website is growing.... Nice work, David! Best regards, -a- Quote
Sabremech Posted June 14, 2015 Author Report Posted June 14, 2015 Working on it steadily but nothing worthy of a picture yet. It's looking like I'll make Oshkosh with it for anyone interested in seeing how the prototype turns out. Thanks, David 3 Quote
DXB Posted June 15, 2015 Report Posted June 15, 2015 This looks very cool. I may want one someday- assuming I ever recover financially from my panel upgrade this summer Quote
Gone Posted June 15, 2015 Report Posted June 15, 2015 This looks very cool. I may want one someday- assuming I ever recover financially from my panel upgrade this summer +1, but my current financial impediment is a new camshaft. Quote
DaV8or Posted June 15, 2015 Report Posted June 15, 2015 +1, but my current financial impediment is a new camshaft. This looks very cool. I may want one someday- assuming I ever recover financially from my panel upgrade this summer Optional vs. required. This is why owning an airplane is so expensive. If you manage to escape the required nightmare repairs, you elect to sink money in it to make it your own. Can't win. 2 Quote
Sabremech Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 As I wait for the actual new cowling pieces, I'm working on the new baffling and getting it to a stopping point. Here's a few photos of the baffle work in progress. David 2 Quote
flyntgr1 Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 So if we already have an open baffle system on an E, will it need your new baffles with your Mod? Quote
MB65E Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 Nice filter location. That will really clean up the lower cowl. See you at Osh...with or with out our airplanes. -Matt Quote
Sabremech Posted June 20, 2015 Author Report Posted June 20, 2015 Hi flyntgr1, the baffling will be part of the STC and the air filter will be relocated, so yes you will need to install the new baffling to sign off the STC. Hi Matt, I really hope to have my airplane at Osh so people can see this up close versus showing parts and pictures. It's going to be close as to whether I make it or not right now. Thanks, David 1 Quote
MB65E Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 You should recruit Sean! He doesn't have enough work over there. Lol. Had a few SWA points so we are all on a 737 this trip. See you soon. -Matt Quote
Sabremech Posted June 26, 2015 Author Report Posted June 26, 2015 A few more update photos. One is of the new carb air box installed to check for fit and the other two photos are of the air filter duct mold. I'll make the air filter duct out of fiberglass for the prototype and then evaluate it for the STC. Thanks, David Matt, Sean declined saying he was too busy with a T-33, his new favorite airplane! Sabremech Posted July 3, 2015 Author Report Posted July 3, 2015 I have the actual new cowling parts in my hand. I'll start the installation of them this weekend. I think they turned out really nice and am looking forward to seeing how they look on my Mooney. Here's a few pictures of the molds and the completed parts. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thank you, David 2 Quote
Hank Posted July 3, 2015 Report Posted July 3, 2015 David, those look great! I'm still shocked by the missing chin bump, but am enthusiastic to see how it looks when mounted. Please refresh my memory with what other external (painted) parts will need to be replaced besides these two? I'm already dreaming of an installation of my own . . . . Quote
Sabremech Posted July 3, 2015 Author Report Posted July 3, 2015 Hi Hank, there are these two parts and a panel that mounts under the carb airbox between the cowl flaps that will be changed and require paint. I'm not sure if I'll post a picture of the full installation here or wait to reveal it at Oshkosh if I make it. If I don't make it I'll post plenty of pictures here. Thank you, David 1 Quote
bonal Posted July 3, 2015 Report Posted July 3, 2015 You big tease We have been waiting with anticipation how this is all going to come out. No matter I hope it all fits as planned looking forward to your test flight profiles. Good luck to you on the install. Quote
francisg Posted July 3, 2015 Report Posted July 3, 2015 I have started drooling at the prospect of what could be... The parts look great. Francis G Quote
Sabremech Posted July 4, 2015 Author Report Posted July 4, 2015 I thought I'd post a few more pictures of the new cowling mod installation progress. Also included a picture of the completed new carb air box. Looking forward to having this on and complete. Thanks, David 2 Quote
jetdriven Posted July 5, 2015 Report Posted July 5, 2015 Is that fiberglass cloth or chopped strand mat, or chopped fiberglass sprayed in. Also what kind of resin did you use? Quote
Guest Posted July 5, 2015 Report Posted July 5, 2015 David, Very impressive work! I look forward to seeing it. Clarence Quote
Sabremech Posted July 5, 2015 Author Report Posted July 5, 2015 Hi Byron, Fiberglass cloth with flame resistant resin. Hi Clarence, thank you. David Quote
