PTK Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 One of my wingtip strobes is acting up I think. It fires normally a few times and then it seems like it lags for a few seconds then fires again a few times. No real pattern or frequency, just random fires with intermittent lags. Also it is noticeably less bright when it fires than the other side. The other side fires on regular frequency and it's very, very bright. I plan on troubleshooting it by swapping it to the other side to see if it's the strobe itself or the power supply. Does anyone recognize these symptoms as strobe or power supply? And if it's the strobe are these bulbs available anywhere or is it time for another solution, i.e. whelen or similar? It is this type of strobe. I believe it's SDI. Quote
Hank Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 Sorry, I thought ACL's were in your knees . . . I'm waiting for LED strobe/Nav lights that will fit inside the wingtips. That's the only way I'll ever get strobes. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 Sounds typical of a power supply/capacitor issue. But, could be a ligament also... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
The-sky-captain Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 Peter, I had the same issue and it got to where the strobe quit completely after several months of intermittent flashing. My mechanic installed a new power supply at annual and all is good now. 1 Quote

PTK Posted November 16, 2014 Author Report Posted November 16, 2014 Sounds typical of a power supply/capacitor issue. But, could be a ligament also... Best regards, -a- Thanks Anthony! Peter, I had the same issue and it got to where the strobe quit completely after several months of intermittent flashing. My mechanic installed a new power supply at annual and all is good now. This is great to hear Bodie! Two votes that it's the power supply. Now the question is are these power supplies repairable? Quote
carusoam Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 Is it a Whelen system? Whelen is in Connecticut. Worth a phone call to get started. http://www.whelen.com/aviation/contact Power supplies.... http://www.whelen.com/aviation/category?head_id=9 Best regards, -a- Quote
bumper Posted November 18, 2014 Report Posted November 18, 2014 Before you condemn the power supply, you might want to swap strobe heads from one wing tip to the other. A weak and failing strobe "bulb" will sometimes produce those symptoms. If the problem moves to the other wing, you'll get of cheaper than buying a new PS. Â bumper 1 Quote
ArtVandelay Posted November 18, 2014 Report Posted November 18, 2014 FYI, if it's the power supply you might want to consider the new LED strobes...no power supply required 1 Quote
