carusoam Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 Maybe we all knew this already... Many of my posts have degF.... Maybe I just forgot... All it takes is hold the zero (0) key and the superscript (°) shows up next to your finger, not where it belongs though. Best regards, -a-

carusoam Posted September 26, 2014 Author Report Posted September 26, 2014 Hah, Take that, Brian! Back in the day, I memorized the list of ASCII codes. Similar to memorizing pi out 50+ decimal places. Hmmmm pi...., -a-
DonMuncy Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 On my laptop, if I hold down the zero key, it prints an infinite number of zeros. If I hold down "alt" and 248, nothing happens.
Tom Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 On my laptop, if I hold down the zero key, it prints an infinite number of zeros. I didn't understand that holding down zero thing myself. If I hold down "alt" and 248, nothing happens. Go to http://www.alt-codes.net/ for a list and http://www.alt-codes.net/how_to_use_alt_codes/ for instructions.
DonMuncy Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 Tom, Please bear with this computer ignoramus. I clicked on the sites you gave and found the symbol codes. Then their instructions said to engage the number lock. I do not have a number pad on my laptop, and digging a little I find that without a number pad, you don't get a number lock. Is there some other way to do this, or am I just going to be unable to use these codes.

I erroneously assumed that your laptop had a number pad (to the right of the QWERTY keyboard. The Alt-code uses the number pad. Some/many laptops without a number pad to the right of the keyboard can temporarilly convert some of the keys on your laptop into a number pad (e.g. 789uiojkl). See:

On laptops "without a number pad" you will usually find there really is a number pad although it is associated with the function (Fn or blue ) keys. As far as I know there is no convention but usually the number 0 will be found on the m key, the 1 on the j key, etc. To lock the keypad functions a usual keypad lock would be press and hold the Fn key then press F11. To unlock press Fn plus F11 again. Once the keypad is locked the alt + keypad keys will give you the characters. HTH - Ken
cliffy Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 Now I have a headache This is why my phone only has 10 keys and no data!
Cruiser Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 On my laptop, if I hold down the zero key, it prints an infinite number of zeros. If I hold down "alt" and 248, nothing happens. On the keyboard the degree symbol ° is Alt + 0176 you can find more symbols like ¼ ½ ¢ in the character map by accessing the START button >, All Programs >, Accessories >, System Tools >, Character Map Click on the symbol and the keystroke info will appear at the bottom of the window. 1
Hank Posted September 27, 2014 Report Posted September 27, 2014 Wow. I use Alt-0186 for °, Alt-0187 through Alt-0189 for quarter fractions, Alt-0177 for +/-, and Alt-016-something for the "cent" sign. All those things I use a lot at work but can't find here on the iPad, because Apple doesn't think I should use them. No, I'm not a big fan of being controlled! Why no USB or memory cards or nothing?
Jim Peace Posted September 27, 2014 Report Posted September 27, 2014 On my macbook pro all I have to do is hold down option and the zero key and the º is typed......
