MooneyPTG Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I am looking for an IFR GPS package that somebody has for sale that upgraded. I don't know if I am in dreamland...but would like to buy a kln 89b or a garmin 155 xl with tray, wiring harness , indicator, antenna and annunciator. Also do I need an annunciator if I use the indicator only for the unit. I am not sure if I fully understand what the annunciator does ( switch?)so if someone could explain I would appreciate it. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Quote
DAVIDWH Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Garmin 155xl on e-bay at present time. Best offer. Quote
Mooneymite Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 With ADS-B looming, you may want a WAAS capable GPS. Spend a little more now, save a little later. And you'd enjoy the stand-alone utility. Even the 430/530 are getting long-in-the-tooth. Older GPS's may be tough to support. Just a thought. Quote
carusoam Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 The requirement for the annunciator was based on line of sight vs distance to the radio stack. Realistically, if you can scan instruments in IMC, you can scan the radio stack as well. But that's not what the FAA asked... So for the rules, you either need one or you don't. The O has the annuciators and the blue light to indicate the source (KLN90B) being supplied to the HSI. Maybe the rules have changed since. Hope that helps??? Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
Mooney65E Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I've got a Garmin GNC 300XL approach certified GPS with a Mid Continent MD41-44 annunciator and a Bendix King KI-202 head. The annunciator is required to make the GPS approved for IFR use per Garmins requirements. The annunciator allows you to arm the approach which the 300XL will not do on its own. It allows you to hold if you are being vectored and want to skip a portion of the approach. It'll also annunciate when you are armed, active or on hold, waypoint arrival as well as any messages you my have on the GPS. Mine was installed maybe 12 plus years ago and has been a bullet proof poor mans GPS. Back in 2001 I saved maybe $4K by going with the 300XL instead of the 430. Would I do it the same now?...Probably not. As Mooneymite said...spend a little more now, you'll be glad you did. Your resale value will also be glad you did. P.S. I'm a GB native...Go Pack! 1 Quote
Schinderhannes Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I couldn’t justify spending 20% to 25% of the airplanes value on the installation of a WAAS unit, and installed a couple of years ago a GX60. You should be able to find one of the older non WAAS IFR units for less than $1000. The units to consider are KLN89B, GX50/60, GNS155XL. The prices should range from $600 to $2500, with the 89B being the lowest and the 155 the highest. Keep in mind displays for KLN 89B and GX50 are not available anymore and the units becomes a small boat anchors if the display goes out. I was willing to take that risk because there are many replacement units available. The IFR installation requires an indicator, annunciator lights and the connection to an altitude encoder. The GX50 needs an encoder with serial output, the 89b works with the standard output, don’t know about the Garmin. Most installations share the indicator with VOR/GS, hence the annunciator- switch combination. The easiest way to install a complete system would be to use one of the small Midcontinent CDI’s with built-in annunciator lights, however you lose the advantage of vertical guidance, one of the features I like the most in our airplane. Considering that an ADS-B compliant solution can be up to 10 times the installation of a simple IFR GPS I decide to wait. I am very hopeful that as the deadlines gets closer and the small airplane revitalization act becomes reality lower cost options will be available for ADS-B compliance. 1 Quote
Awful_Charlie Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I've got to be pulling out my GNS480 soon, as it doesn't do the EU 8.33kHz com channels. It's WAAS/LPV certified, and they're currently going for about 5k, but I'll lob in the MX20 with chartview as well, along with all the trays - as long as you're not urgent that is! Quote
chrisjoh Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 I have a 155XL and it does work well. It DOES require an annunciator to be approved (and functional) for approaches, it is not just a pilot's line of sight issue. With non WASS 430s going for $4-5k and WASS units at $7k I understand the attractiveness of a $1k purchase, but don't forget you'll be investing in installation which is mostly unit (model) specific.
