Does anyone know how much the roof vent should open? I have a m20f with 201 windshield but taxi and in air - just not much flow. I suspect the cable has been shortened over time from the end breaking (possibly). In full up position it is about a finger width open on the front edge.

There are some pictures from somebody rebuilding their roof vent. You may be able to search for it.

Taking off the ceiling panel is a big challenge for some...

Should open about 2 inches.  Just repaired mine.  You have to remove the interior roof panels and do micro surgery to remove the gear mechanism.  Clean and lube it and the cable.  The cable is solid so can get bent and then will jam.

My cable seems to work easily so I'm thinking its been shortened over the years. Def not opening two inches so that would cut down on airflow. Looks like I'm in for a removal and installing at least a longer inner cable.

Just got the F model last July and really enjoyed it until a slight engine prob. Bad rings on #4 turned into bad cam so it's out for o'haul. I flew a musketeer for 20 yrs and I can't get the smile off my face when I fly now. Love these Mooneys!! I'm going through major withdrawals waiting for the engine return.

I just had my cable and cable sleeve replaced and all 4 vents cleaned and lubed as well. Replaced the plastic inside the vents too.

It opens about 2 inches. It really blows great at cruise and is a nice gentle flow at taxi.

It works great now.  Worth the money and labor to get the torn all down and fixed.

My mechanic cursed up a storm getting all the overhead parts removed, but it was worth it to me.

There could be several reasons for it not opening fully. There may be something blocking full movement of the gear or the cable could be bent so that you only get a little movement. The wire is very stiff so it would just feel like it stopped. The cable is not firmly attached to the gear, only wrapped around a post. There is also a cable housing holder (clamp) that could have slipped and that would limit movement.

It is a little tricky to pull the mechanism out but worth the trouble. Also make sure nothing is blocking the vent itself on the top of the plane. Nice place for nests, etc.

Mine opens about an inch or so ...

Not sure about an F, but even ... IF I remember correctly ... after the knob on my C model opens the actual vent opening on the roof, you still need to open each of the four circular vents individually ... Just thinking out loud ...

David,

I have the larger vents with the louvers. Are they able to be adjusted individually like the others? If so I was not aware and will have to check that as well.

Dave's description matches the vent/louver setup on my 68 C.  Regular shots of Tri-flow keeps everything working smoothly, especially the bowden cable lash up that opens and closes the overhead exterior vent.  Mine shows evidence of repairs by previous owners but works well now with a minimum of TLC.

That will give me several thing to check - as soon as it warms a bit more. Been 18 - 20F all day with same temp and snow tomorrow here in the Abilene area. It's ok with me if the northern states would keep this weather to yourselves. I'm just not tough enough!

Thanks
