Guest Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 We've been testing the new GDL 39 (3d model) and are very impressed with it. Pics below It pairs with the Garmin Pilot app to provide an artificial Attitude indicator, which could really save your butt in an IMC instrument failure. In a very preliminary first pass with the device, we're very impressed with it. The unit can be calibrated for level flight and then tracks seamlessly with the plane. We found the error rate to be +/- 1 degrees but thats it. Tracks smooth and instantly. The key with the AHRS is to calibrate the GDL39 when it is in true level flight, at cruise or on true level taxi way. Easy to calibrate in the Garmin menu/Pilot app. Pics and Videos below, and more to come http://switchboxcontrol.com/news/2014/2/1/gdl39-3d-w-attitude-ahrs-vs-steam-gauge Quote
MooneyBob Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 I have a original GDL39. Can it be upgraded to 3D? If not, I have my GDL 39 with the battery pack for sale. I really like it and together with the Garmin Pilot app ( and Garmin D2 watch as a back up ) it is one awesome tool. Navigation, approach plates with georeference, safe taxi, weather, traffic, terrain, you name it. You can add the new Garmin VIRB camera and record you flight parameters. Quote
Guest Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 I just sold my original GDL last week and got the new one... really great upgrade. Highly recommended Quote
wishboneash Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 Sigh.... I could come up with something stronger than this... I would probably get banned. Quote
MooneyBob Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 I don't understand guys what do you mean. Can you explain please? I want to learn something too. Quote
chrisjoh Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 They're bummed that they bought (and own) the earlier version of the GDL-39 which did not include the built-in AHRS which allows display of attitude info in Garmin Pilot. I personally have a Stratus 2 (which works with ForeFlight) which includes AHRS but Foreflight hasn't integrated the display of an attitude indicator a well as Garmin has, you need to switch to a second app on the iPad to display it (or you can display it on an app running on your iPhone). Works but not as elegant as Garmin solution. But all of this is pretty fluid and I'm guessing Foreflight will offer similar on an upgrade and hopefully synthetic vision too. Quote

flyboy0681 Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 All of the pictures that I've seen of this unit have the pilot using an iPad for the Garmin AI. I'm wondering how well the Garmin AI displays on the iPhone because it may be more practical for the pilot who is ready for such an event by carrying two sided tape in their flight bag. Doing so would allow them to put the iPhone directly over the failed AI (assuming it doesn't also cover the airspeed indicator and altimeter) thus placing it in the same spot on the panel while also covering up the failed instrument, essentially killing two birds with one stone. I'll assume that the iPhone version will eventually be updated with this feature as well. Quote
