For those patiently waiting. POH-LEATHER BINDER just over $200.

also Mooney can send you a pdf copy of a generic POH but you have to order from a MSC for an actual POH for your specific aircraft. Not sure the cost of that.  But the difference is really in the weight and balance section and the supplements. It’s easy to print replacement pages if you just need the general pages. Ie a specific page torn out or missing.

Hey! Leather is expensive and is both prettier and weighs more than scanning and keeping it on your tablet.

In the Cessna t206h Cessna charged three times the poh cost to include that page and you still need to go through and verify all your stcs.

To be clear though. This was just the cost of empty leather binder and does not include POH.  But I did reach out to Mooney and they were very helpful to send some of the supplemental info I didn’t have and sent me a generic PDF copy of my model POH.

And lets you look things up while using your tablet as an EFB . . . .

I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek but between bookmarks and search capability, I can look up things in the digitized version much, much faster than the hard copy. (Actually, that is using it as an EFB.) And I definitely don't mind turning away from the map and just flying the panel while I do (assuming I don't just use the multiple window capability). I sometimes do that with my checklists. Not all the time. I prefer paper checklists but have forgotten to bring my customized one with me and just bring it up on the tablet.

But really, unless there is another person on board who can grab the book and leaf through it to the appropriate section, the digital is much more efficient for me if I need to find something in it.

Good luck with that after an electrical failure. Been there, done that, on a VOR-A approach in West Virginia--drop gear, landing light on, everything went dark. Level off, hand crank gear, look through the book. Steam gages kept working.

How did you look through the book with an electrical failure? I'm guessing an on-board electric failure affected your paper book about the same amount as it would affect a tablet with an independent electrical source? Perhaps a better question would be, what did the book, paper or plastic,  tell you to do you wouldn't have done without it?

{heavy sigh] I never quite understood the need for people to  "prove" their way is the only right one and only the others have problems which are impossible to overcome. I'm media neutral. I think digital (with an independent electrical source; I suspect paper might without an independent electrical source - like flashlight - would not do that well during a night electrical failure) is more efficient for searching for information and finding it quickly. But I prefer paper checklists and notepads by a wide margin. though I woldn't dream of trying to get someone else to stop using the scratchpad, saying, "what if you drop your pen!!!! ??"  I'm also not suggesting people toss their POH onto a shelf at home and remove it from the cockpit entirely, just use whatever method is more efficient for them.

I did what I needed to do (leveled off, aimed away from terrain and finished cranking the gear down; Avionics Master off; check breakers; Avionics on ,still dead, back off) then looked in the book to see if I missed anything. Then have the book to the CFII sitting beside me, so they could experience the Emergency section in its complete 2-page glory.

While flying the plane using KY steam gages, which eventually got me home using pilotage below Vg = 125 mph.

None of the page turning or book passing interfered with continuing to fly the plane, except my VOR heads didn't work. But my (paper) sectional had minimum altitudes on it, as did the Low Enroute.

Good job. Both of you. I would have done pretty much the same. The only difference would be my POH check would have been digital and my sectional as well (it would be hard for me to pull out a paper chart - my last one was 10.5 years ago. But, as I said before, with someone else in the cockpit who could, I would have had them pull out the paper POH for good CRM.

That's actually a good point.   I have a tablet with Avare that I let passengers use to help look for traffic, etc., and having all of the POH docs and an easy-to-find checklist file on it could be useful as well.

A recommendation. If you haven't already, it is worthwhile to find someone who can OCR and bookmark the POH. A good paper POH will have tabs for the sections; this the the equivalent. OCR often requires a subscription-based app but I think most of the free PDF readers for Android will let you create bookmarks.  Place a link to your POH and checklist right on your home screen so it's only a tap away.

I found this leather binder on Amazon for $16.47.  Looks nice and is about the only half-sheet "A5" size three ring leather binder I could find.  I found several places online that could create a leather monogrammed binder but they were all full 8.5x11 size.  So if you need to replace your binder, you're stuck with Mooney's 0.2AMU leather embossed binder, a generic Quill A5 size binder, or something like this...
