Gilt Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 On my 63C, I have a avionics cooling vent (front left)... Can it be opened and closed? Is it needed when I have an avionics cooling fan? It lets the cold air inside during winter...also not sure when flying in rain if water is getting inside. Keep it for back-up cooling or plug it? Do all mooneys have this or did it go away? Thanks Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 My 65 C had a vent from the passenger side scoop. It routed air to a 'distribution' air box made of Royalite (I think that was the material) forward of the avionics area. It did not do much to cool anything. Yes, some water did come in via that vent when flying in rain, though not much. During a total avionics upgrade in 2013 I scrapped all of that old "cooling" system and put in an avionics fan that pulls air from the cabin. 1 Quote
mike28w Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Hmmm.... I have a '63 M20C and I'm not aware of a similar vent on the pilot's side. Maybe someone already removed mine ?? Just a data point.... mike Quote
takair Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 My 64 E has one. There is a small flapper in the small line right above the scoop. It can be seen from the outside and can be closed with a small handle on the inside. Not the easiest to get to with the interior panel, but if you know where it is it's not bad. I think it helps keep the overall stack cool in summer, but is not required if you have a fan. I close it in the winter. Quote
carusoam Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 My 65C was as Jerry described. The royaltie was broken down pretty bad and cold air would flow in the winter. Find the source of the cooling hose.... Fans would be an upgrade to this system. Even modernish radios produce a fair amount of heat... Having a system that could modulated the amount of air would be nice??? And direct to the target instead of on the people. Seeking professional advice would probably be a good idea at an instrument shop in your neighborhood. Best regards, -a- Quote
Gilt Posted January 5, 2014 Author Report Posted January 5, 2014 Thanks guys ...I'll look for the handle to the flapper... Quote
N601RX Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 I capped the cooling vent off and added a fan. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 I wouldn't use it. The old tube radios could stand a bit of rain, but today's expensive solid state stuff seems to valuable to risk getting water in them. Quote
N601RX Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 The new stuff will not tolerate moisture. Most install manuals now say to use a fan and not connect to ram air. Here is a Garmin 340 that belongs to a friend of mine. Its about 4 years old. They are not even conformal coating the boards. Garmin refused to even attempt to repair it because of the corrosion.(Which I agree with) Quote
