joegoersch Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 I'm getting excited about getting a new Retina Ipad Mini for my '89 M20J. I have an ipad but it's just too big to mount so i ride with it on the copilot seat. I hoping I can conveniently mount the mini. I have looked at a few mounts and am wondering if anyone has experience with the Sea Sucker clamp mount ? http://www.seasucker.com/shop/clamp/#tab-description It looks like it'd work, but nothing but learning from someone else. Any place other than the yoke that might be better ? Thanks. Quote
Danb Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 I went back to my IPad 2 since my old eyes had trouble once using the mini, I went to a thigh strap which when getting used to works great plus it is out of the sun most of time,by putting a sheet of white paper I use for notes clearances etc it stay a little cooler. Could not use it on pilots seat also less chance of spatial disorientation. Either way both are great platforms.. 1 Quote
DAVIDWH Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 Sportys pilot shop has several to choose from. Yoke mount works for me. Easy to adjust and work with. No experience with Sea Sucker mount, but if a vacuum involved, personally, I would forget about it. Glare can be an issue. Quote

Cruiser Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 I do not use an iPad but suggest you look at mounting the yoke clamp above the compass on the center frame rod that runs up the windshield. I had this in the M20J and now in the M20R. IT is out of the way, easy to see and read by both pilot and copilot (some might need bifocals) and doesn't need to be moved or shuffled around. It does block direct vision out the copilot side of the windshield, but you can easily see around it for looking at traffic, obstacles or when maneuvering with a small movement of you head. With the proper mount it can even fold up in a "stored" position against the headliner. Quote

This is what I use as well. It works great via a yoke mount clamp over the top of yoke with a short arm. I use my iPad almost exclusively for plates. Navigation is generally via the flight plan function on the GPS and the moving map on my MFD (796). I found the back and forth between the panel and the 396 made the 396 unusable. It was a nice reference, but it wasn't anything more than a backup as I didn't use it. I would be reluctant to put anything as big as an iPad in that position because it could significantly limit visibility, but if it works for you that's cool. The former owner frequently flew with his wife in the back seat and I guess she liked to be able to see the moving map. Makes sense, but it wasn't a workable setup for me. Quote

I have a ram mini mount waiting for my mini retina to be delivered. That iPad is going to hurt if you have an accident. It reminds me of that stinson crash in Idaho. The iPad on the yoke really messed the pilot's face up. Quote

I recently purchased a GDL-39 and committed to the Garmin Pilot app. I have a full size iPad 2 that I use for flight planning and as a backup for the Nexus 7. The problem is not the Nexus 7. That worked great. It is a little smaller than the iPad Mini has good battery life and is very stable as a platform. The issue was that the Garmin app is pretty different on the Android and Apple platforms. Garmin clearly has two development teams working on this application and the iOS version has the most features while the Android version always seems to be catching up to the iOS version. The presentation of information is different on each platform as well. Although they are depicting the same information, it is done differently. In addition, I also still have a license for ForeFlight and it won't run on the Android platform. ForeFlight works only on the iOS. Quote

I actually ended up with a spare set with inertial reels that I am getting ready to list. Will be $400 including the mounting hardware for C-F models for two front seats. I am installing a set in the front on our F and then planning on working to get a 337 to put a set in the rear as well. Quote

Marauder Posted February 28, 2014 Report Posted February 28, 2014 If you zoom the picture of the iPad Mini on the RAM Mount X Clip attached to the Center Post, you can see attached to the top of the center post - my home engineered headset rack to hang our headsets ... got the idea from another guy's picture here on Mooenyspace! Dave -- does your X clip rock when the iPad Mini is in it? I just picked up a set for my iPads and was surprised to see that it will move. Quote
