  1. Well this was not a stupid reason why I was grounded...but for sure this was a strange reason... Last Tuesday we had a volcano erruption close to the airport... So I drove as close as I could totake a picture. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/36816-volcano/

  2. Thanks for saying, "Well done" but in fact it was done poorly because it should never have been done at all. One thing I did learn however, is that if you land with wheels up on grass the plane stops in a very short distance as the prop still turns and digs big divots along the skid. - I told my dentist that people talk to me like I'm some kind of hero while in fact I was just trying my best to save my own rear end. Then the dentist said, "Mark I belong to that country club and over there you are no hero."

  3. This is a semi refined clip of a flight from Truckee to Livermore on 6/21/15. DA was 8400 and winds were from 250 at 16 kts gusting to 26. It was very pumpy below 11000 feet (2 min 50 sec into the clip). I usually take off from 20 at Truckee and do a circling 270 climbing at 105 kts over the airport. http://youtu.be/70aGyEPUHXU

  4. I have the actual new cowling parts in my hand. I'll start the installation of them this weekend. I think they turned out really nice and am looking forward to seeing how they look on my Mooney. Here's a few pictures of the molds and the completed parts. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thank you, David

  6. When I bought my 830, they were selling for $3,400 and now the 900 are selling for roughly the same amount. I replaced my 830 with a 900 because as Bob points out, it eliminates your 40+ year primary gauges. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  8. Well... I had a panel with a lot of digital and analog instruments mounted from one edge of the panel to the other, I count 12! All are gone, consolidated in the 930 and its RAD. Who wants to scan their whole panel for possible trending info when you can have them together and have an Remote Alarm Display right in your primary scan zone to catch potential problems at once? Not me.

  9. We go to church on Sunday and whenever we say "and lead us not into temptation" I always think of my airplane. On Oct. 15, 2004 I had a fire in my engine in hard IFR and managed to crash on the 6th fairway of the Hyannisport Golf Club during the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Golf Tournament. Guys from Boston Sports teams and all sorts of celebrities were there. The paper said they paid $10,000 a foursome to play. - I had a hot mag that morning and allowed a mechanic to work on it while I went to my office. The IA disconnected the fuel line to get at the left magneto and when he reinstalled the line he failed to reconnect the fuel pressure gauge. Fuel sprayed like perfume unto the engine and when the exhaust manifold was hot enough "POOF" there was the fire. I think I was stupid to fly in the fog just after work was done on the airplane, but once over land I turned the plane into the wind flew it slowly all the way to the ground and made a couple little adjustments when I could see where I was at 200 ft. As the years go by I'm getting more and more careful.

  10. Good points PTK, your logic is why I went with the JPI 830 rather than 900.

  13. Even if you do go with Aspen, you still need a backup attitude indicator. So you will not lose the overhaul cost either way.

  15. I'd get the stratus 2 then. I hope I never need the AHRS feature, but it's nice to know it's there. I have a stormscope, but the ADSB weather is a great tool to have, especially with all the pop up thunderstorms we get down here in the south.

  17. Spot on man! A feature set of options rather than bundling them into the final product works for most aviation consumers. The "see how much you get for a lot?" approach doesn't because it drives the purchase cost too high. Aspen has the basic unit, you want to drop your primary instruments you can buy the extended battery option, you want SVT, extra, you want AOA, extra. Even Garmin has done this with the FlightStream and TAWS. I also think it would help if you were able to do marketing targeted at an the open hierarchy many of us want. I know that your unit will work with an Aspen, but will it share the ADS-B technology with it? I'm sure I can find out by digging, but if you want to take a bite out of the gorilla's pile of bananas, you had better devise a way to get the gorilla to look the other way while you are doing it. A perfect example is the Connect Pilot and Connext situation. The gorilla responded, didn't they? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  18. Here's an interesting statement from the NAV WORX site regarding VFR operation: http://www.navworx.com/products-ADS600-EXP.php AutoStealth Mode: The UAT technology is the only ADS-B equipment that will allow for privacy. Normally, ADS-B devices transmit the aircrafts ICAO number, a unique code that is assigned by the FAA to each aircraft. When flying VFR however, there is no need to let the FAA know who you are. The ADS600-EXP randomizes the ICAO whenever the squawk code is set to 1200. In addition, the N-Number of the aircraft configured is changed to "N0", an unassigned N-Number

  19. The Mooney fake wood panels I have to say are about the ugliest thing I have ever seen.

  20. Hi Hank, there are these two parts and a panel that mounts under the carb airbox between the cowl flaps that will be changed and require paint. I'm not sure if I'll post a picture of the full installation here or wait to reveal it at Oshkosh if I make it. If I don't make it I'll post plenty of pictures here. Thank you, David

  21. Well, boney, my plane has some metal flake on it, but it's certainly neither all-metallic nor the all wet look like the cars posted above. Going back from the cockpit, the first two have some metallic. I wish all of them did, but I'm far too much of a CB to repaint while it's still in good shape!

  22. Well you could have opened a large can of worms here. I am going to paint my 67 m20 E someday. but I want it modern, hey, older Mooneys have glass panels don't they? The old paint reminds me of the Leave it to Beaver show, I don't know why, but it just does. Unless you are going for a restoration to that period I think old designs are just that ,dated. I kind of think there should be a stylized letter on the tail , like the O on the ovation , the A on the Acclaim. So I want a large stylized E on my tail. I also think no one is pushing the paint to the max, as they do in the auto painting field. I would like a fade from black to red on the bottom half and a fade from red to black on the top half. (front to back). And I have yet to see a metal flake, even a small one (.004). I would like a large flake. And of course there is the choice of Pearl,or even color shifting chameleon. Now call me crazy, I know you will , but review some of these allkandy youtube videos. I am amazed at the depth of the color under the wet-wet clearcoat. http://shop.allkandy.com/ carl

  23. Your product is nice. I would like one, but the price point is off. Undercut your competition for the basic box and you'll sell many more of these boxes. At least $1000 less than the Comp. Garmin units. Trying to justify the price based on the "Extra" features will not be as effective. Careful with subjective thoughts on ease of user interface and feature improvement vs the competition. It's easy to be blind to the faults when "it's your baby." The people you need to convince to buy are not necessarily people like me (brand blind and cash poor)... Your target audience needs to be people like PTK (a known Garmin fanboy). To sway them, you must strategically take away their capability to say "no." not only do your features have to exceed the GTN, but the price must be well lower. Jmho. I do admit I'm not a marketing guru, but I did spend years in the aviation test and evaluation (and acquisitions) world. Edit: I've flown 6 or 7 different jets. all would benefit from a modern interface. But "modern interface" isn't unique to avidyne- the Garmin interface is equally user friendly (subjective opinion based on comparing the two simulators). Edit2: the real capability over a 430W is primarily in the "addons" (interface, not capability). A flightstream costs $700 and gets you that interface upgrade. The 440 costs $12000. Hard to justify for the average 430W owner... It's not like he's going to be capable of some new lower approach mins or capabilities.... Edit3- all that said I'll happily swap out my 430 and test one of your 440's out in my own aircraft for you- free of charge

  24. That's a beautiful photo, Oscar. You should enter it in a contest! Having it happen near your home, though, would certainly cast a whole different perspective on it, though. I hope you stay safe, and that the lava flow avoids settled areas. Maybe the ash won't be too bad.

  25. Living here in the south...I say just do a Confederate Flag theme just to stir the pot some more..lol. Whatever design you decide just pick a quality shop. I had mine done in Mena and they were fantastic to work with and had it done in less than three weeks. I like the new modern schemes, but it seems like that's the same design everyone has been using lately (including me). After looking at the pics you posted I think a sharp vintage paint scheme would look awesome. You could also get real vintage like below. This paint job would get lots of attention...

  27. The 700 can be ordered up with almost all options available , it is a great unit , and JPI is great for service , and they have been around practically forever , (so has insight) the nice thing about the 700 is it fits in a small hole , so no panel mods required , It also affords cheap upgrade paths when you want to upgrade in the future......If you choose the 700 , leave an extra 18 inches of the harness in a loop , so if you upgrade in the future and want to move it , you wont have to buy the 300 dollar extension harness.......I started with a 700 , and upgraded it to a 830 ....

  28. I used Scheme Designers. It is good to see it before it's on your plane. They submitted about 25 layouts before we got it. A lousy scheme costs the same to paint as a good one.

  31. I don't like it when I see older Mooneys with latest style Mooney paint schemes. I prefer when I see a brand new shiny paint job in some other paint scheme, perhaps a classic paint scheme.

  32. Airparts lockhaven wanted like $2k to overhaul Kelley Instruments of Wichita wanted somewhere between $100 to $150 to fix and calibrate each gauge, but will not issue certification. Since I only had problem with 1 or 2 gauges, I ended shipping it to them. I'll keep you posted how it goes. Thanks!

  33. Clarence asked if my hangar elf fairings were available to others. I hesitated in answering, as I did not want to get myself in the position of making this a business. If I tried to sell these at a profit, figuring in my elf's labor, they might cost as much as Mooney would charge. But as long as I don't get inundated, he could turn out a few to those needing one. The cost of the materials to make them are pretty low, and shipping would probably not be too bad. I don't charge my Mooney friends for my elf's labor. If you need one, PM me.

  35. Would love nothing more than to install a new dig engine monitor. I have the same problem with my Garwin Cluster and am going to have it serviced. I called Dan at lake aero and he advised calling Kelly instruments I spoke with Nick and he provided good info as to what they do he also indicated they calibrate the gauges as part of the service. based on Dan's recommendation I will be sending the package to them the number is 316-945-7171 I cant remember where they are located but will find out when I get mine ready for service.
