N201MKTurbo Posted February 18, 2016 Report Posted February 18, 2016 I think I will start making fuel caps! Three die cast aluminum parts, a stamped washer and one turning. A little plating and some paint. Who wants one? Quote
bcconsult21 Posted February 19, 2016 Author Report Posted February 19, 2016 Funny Guys!! The "New ones" from the factory are $2800+ last I heard. I am just trying to make a point. If you need a nice one I will work on the price a bit.... Thanks for all your comments brothers. [I agree I am in the wrong business too!] Quote
Piloto Posted February 19, 2016 Report Posted February 19, 2016 I found this one for $55 on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/111730046065?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82 But lacks the $900 paint job. 4 Quote
jrwilson Posted February 19, 2016 Report Posted February 19, 2016 it supposedly has new o rings also. Only $99. Not as shiny though Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
jrwilson Posted February 19, 2016 Report Posted February 19, 2016 I had to have mooney make (special order from their source actually) two new ones for my 1963 C, they are an older style. That was $600 for both...I'm surprised that this style supposedly is $2800 each new. Mooney implied mine were the expensive ones. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
bcconsult21 Posted February 19, 2016 Author Report Posted February 19, 2016 Now that I've stirred you all up.....Just let me know if you need one and we can haggle [a lot]. My price is not the issue because I will either keep it, sell it or give it away as I see fit. My issue was how did the new ones go from $1000 to almost $3000, with the factory re-opening? Quote

MB65E Posted February 19, 2016 Report Posted February 19, 2016 They are 1300 each on the CJ and Cessna or Shaw will not give the p/n for the orings. They force you to buy new caps!! Lets just say I found the P/n another way. They are Goofballs, -Matt Quote

Piloto Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Due to long delivery times and high prices with Shaw Aero Mooney and Cirrus opted for the Newton fuel caps. http://www.newtonsprl.co.uk/ These caps are smaller and will not fit the cap adapter on the wing for the Shaw Caps. However Newton makes an insert adapter that allows their caps to be used with the Shaw adapter. Quote

Lets just say I found the P/n another way. They are Goofballs, -Matt And to think that standardization and manufacturing in bulk is supposed to bring costs down... I guess not! It pains me to see that my fuel caps on my 1984 J are still in production and gaskets are available but cost so much just because they are in use on a Jet. F'ing ridiculous in my book... I can't believe that occasionally I leave my--new to me--J on the ramp overnight, protected by a cheap $2 lock. That $2 lock is protecting a $13k radio, $10k autopilot et al, and I have now learned that I have $2k worth of fuel caps sitting on the wings... Ugh, maybe I should lock it away now and never fly it again out of fear! Thanks $950 Fuel cap thread... 1 Quote
bcconsult21 Posted February 22, 2016 Author Report Posted February 22, 2016 So I started this as a wake up call. I had an incident with the hub cap too, and the new ones are $350 for a 2" cap. The dust cover [6" flat plate]is another $330. FYI So my point is someday we may get $500 for a used gas cap. Aren't the owners supposed to only use approved components. I noticed most of the other caps were for Cherokee or Cessna. FYI. Stick to Mooney or your insurance may not cover you...Just a thought. Quote
jonhop Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 3 D printing cannot get here soon enough... Oh wait, the printed parts will not be approved/certified even though they may be superior to FAA certified--yellow tag--parts/components or manufacturer produced parts, produced at a premium, by manufacturers just because they hold an air-frame certificate or STC... Until that is, they get tired and go out of business abandoning said air-frame/STC... I wish there was a better way--part 23 rewrite--to make aviation more affordable... Quote

ryoder Posted February 27, 2016 Report Posted February 27, 2016 Yes they can and do fly ifr. There are million dollar experimentals out there. The avionics is signed off by avionics shop and the pito system gets ifr certified too. Quote
