I turned my 231 into the avionics shop almost six weeks ago for a panel upgrade to include the G500 SVT. Shortly after I dropped the plane off I was told that the G500 was on back order from Garmin. After waiting a month I called again and still no G500. Last week I called Garmin and the support guy said he could not tell me when G500s would be available. Has anyone else heard about this and are other avionics shops holding some ? Ray

G500 arrived today, so plane will be put back together this week. Just my luck that I'd be the last person to buy a product in a series?? We'll see if they are releasing a new product. Not only is the panel taken apart, but the whole interior was removed to run wires I guess? Thanks for the input. Ray

Sorry for delay..my assembly took 2 months...you are going to love the g500..sooner or later you will want to upgrade to synthetic vision....chart view not worth it but the little green ball you get with syn vis is a great ifr approach aid

My G500 will have SVT ( see first post) , now I'm starting to second guess my decision to leave in several redundant instruments. I just want to get the plane back in the air. Of course because it's taken so long, my annual has expired so add another week?? Ray

It's done. It took eight weeks, almost all of that time was waiting for back ordered components from Garmin. It looks great. I'll post photos when I get the plane back from the annual. Components: G500 MFD/PFD; G500 SVT; dual G430W; GDL88 ADS-B; Garmin GAD43E interface; GTX 330E/S transponder; G696 w/XMWX; JPI 830. Ray

Hopefully someone fired your plane up for 30sec-1 min to keep oil on all the parts during the down time or better yet flew it in the mean time.

Off topic but as a reminder, and the OP may have but if its gonna sit make sure it sits with clean oil in the case.....sorry ADHD kicking in.....

Aaron, they had the panel completely apart before they knew components weren't available, so they didn't start it at all. After getting a ferry permit the mechanic flew the plane to get the annual done. I'll take photos and post them as soon as I get the plane back. Ray

The hits just keep on coming...my plane needed to have an automatic wastegate installed so my mechanic ordered a rebuilt one from LASAR after they told him that Merlyn doesn't make them any longer. That's incorrect, I contacted Merlyn this week, and they do have wastegates for 231s. So after waiting another month,.....my plane may be fixed this month. Three months after turning it in for a panel upgrade and the annual. A tank reseal and repainting are definitely out for this year...I want to just fly the plane! Ray

Just out of curiosity how much cash did this set you back?

Probably more than he wants to talk or write about...Good luck with your bird. Mine was down for five weeks that eventually turned into annual time. Sometimes you can't win for losing. It will be worth it in the end. Cheers :)

At very long last, I got my plane back today after the G500 installation and an annual with the installation of a Merlyn wastegate (already have an intercooler). The saga began 27 May! In the end, I'm very happy with the quality workmanship of the folks at Crystal Avionics in New Braunfels Texas. The long delays were from Garmin and LASAR (the wastegate). Flies great, panel works, GPSS and synthetic vision are cool. Apparently Garmin has some upgrades to do for folks with the KFC200 autopilot and the software for ADS-B display on the G500, but I'm happy. Here are a couple of photos which are also in my gallery. My #2 radio was broken and 34 yrs old, so I decided rather suddenly to upgrade the panel. If I had spent as much time thinking about it as I did waiting for it, I would have removed the vacuum plumbing. The 696 has a split screen panel "six pack" as a backup which does all the calculations based on GPS. When I'm not checking weather on the 696, it shows moving map with heading. I think it may have been better (and more expensive) to remove the 430Ws and place the 750/650 combo and remove the 696 to make room for the instruments currently above and below the 430s. Also I already had the JPI 830 recently placed. Had that not been the case, I would have gone with the JPI 930 or the EI engine gauges. That would have allowed me to remove the original MP and RPM gauges. This should hold me for ten years! Time to learn how to use it all. Ray

Sweet.... I say whooo sweet...

You will someday forget about the long delay.... well maybe not but I am sure you WILL ENJOY your new panel.  I spoke to John yesterday, I hope that Garmin will soon turn back on the enable ADS-B on so we can see the displayed weather on the MFD portion of the G500.  Good luck and fly safe, hope to see your plane in person sometime.
