Non Aviation Certified Parts

  1. 1. What parts do you use?

    • Certified only landing/taxi lights
      4
    • Non certified LED landing lights (tractor, expiramental aircraft worthy)
      4
    • Non stamped incandecent bulbs for landing lights (home depot)
      4
    • Door seals that are non aviation
      6
    • Other parts that are not technically certified
      7
    • ALWAYS CERTIFIED PARTS as the aircraft is unairworthy otherwise

This is REALLY interesting! But does it mean that we can replace landing lights? I don't see them listed, only batteries...

The AC says "examples of substituted parts include circuit breakers, solenoids, batteries, alternator belts, wheels, and tires."

I take that to mean "not limited to"

It says later " Consider certain factors when determining whether one part is a simple substitution for another, (1) What is the function of the original part, (2) Are there current industry standards for the part".

"The most important aspect to consider when substituting parts is to consider whether the failure of the part would prevent continues safe flight and landing."

HID's and EFIS were targeted in a FAA letter about a year ago. It specifically prevents installation unless done under STC.

Byron,

Still unclear to me do you think this could be interpreted and allow a HID to serve as a replacement part for landing light?

Go over to the Pilot's of America forum and search "Landing Light". There is at least a 14 page thread on changing a light bulb.

I've researched alot on it and like Byron said you can't get field approvals on these, but my question is does this specific documentation mentioned above allow my AP to have a work around the system.

From what I gathered from the lengthy thread is that "it depends". I have read everything from "log book entry" to "Field approval". It is amazing that something as simple changing a bulb can have so many answers.

We logged it as a minor change and log entry, based on the idea it's a PAR 46 and is equal or better to the GE 4522 in light output and durability. However, since then the FAA targeted HID landing lights as you have to have an STC.

What I am referring to in this thread is the Grote LED tractor light.
