Aera 796 Approaches

I have a GNS 650 and yoke mounted 796 that are tethered. When I load a flight plan on the GNS 650 it displays on the 796. However when I select an IFR approach on the GNS it does not display on the 796 and the GNS continues to show the GPS route to the airport. I would like to see the approach drawn on the map for positional awareness. Does anyone know if this is by design or am I not doing something right?

Even the 196 has GPS approaches. Non GPS approaches are not there though, as far as I know...

In short, check to see if your two devices communicate GPS only approaches, then non-GPS ones.

I have a 796 with a feed from my GNS480. When I load an approach and it adds waypoints to the flightplan they show up on the 796. Just a thought- when I look at the flightplan on the 796 it shows "Aviation In." Does the 796 show Aviation In? Hopefully it's just a setting either on the 796 or the GTN.

I haven't noticed if a GPS approach loads onto the 796 when I activate the approach on the 480, but I'll watch the 796 on Sunday. Hopefully, when I shoot a GPS approach with the 480, I automatically get an advisory HSI and glideslope on the 796.

The GTN 650 won't display the approach plate. The GTN 750, with it's larger screen, will. The GTN 650 will display all of the fixes on the approach however.

The 796 will show a geo-referenced approach plate if you select waypoint info - TERPS - desired approach. You will have to manually select this.

Now for my return question. Having the serial port enabled between the GTN 650 and my 796 causes the 796 unit to hang. Garmin blames the software in the GTN and says the next update will fix it. I have the latest available SW in both units. It happens enough that I have to have the serial port input on the 796 configured to "none." Have you experiencd 796 hangs? If this is working for you, can you let me know what software version and serial port configuration you have on the 650 and 796?

Thanks. My 796 is set to Aviation In which will recognize the Garmin GPS. When I select the approach on the GNS, the GNS will show the procedure turns, intercept, etc but the 796 does not. I am speaking of the map and not the TERPS.

I wonder if the 796 has to be in maximum zoom to show the approach markings? The TERPS work great by the way.

Hi,

I can remember that while I was doing some research on that configuration I found a statement from Garmin which said that the transfer of approach waypoints is no longer supported in the GTN series due to the new Arinc leg types. Unfortunetly I don't know the link where I found that .

I also found a statement in the 796 manual saying that only the leg from the FAF will be displayed. Not really what I had expeted/wished but that looks exactly like your problem ?

Update:

I have done a lot of experimentation with this since my question.

This combination leads to a hang within minutes.

serial port 1 Aviation In

serial port 2 Aviation In/NEMA & VHF out

I also found that this combination works without hang:

serial port 1 Aviation In/NEMA & VHF out

serial port 2 Aviation In/NEMA & VHF out

I have also been in touch with Garmin on this. They have replicated the fail. Apparently the trigger is a mixture of different "Aviation In" formats on the 2 serial ports. They tell me the problem should be corrected in the next 796 release.
