Hello Mooney People, Just had six factory new cylinders put on Ovation. Carefully read all of Mike Busch' suggestions about how to break in properly. Spoke to Dan Lightner

in Carlisle, PA about ceramic coating and flew to Harrisburg from Venice, FL with one fuel stop in Hickory, NC. Ran at 75%+  power running ROP and not overly leaning.

ran well and.........10 knots faster than usual. ...no tailwind. but I did watch CHT's and EGT's. Over the flights up to Pennsylvania and back to Florida, CHT's were close to 400

and looking at EGT's , the #4 cylinder was always 50 degrees hotter than the others. I dont know why???  Would be greatful for any ideas!!!  Ceramic coating is beautiful!

Thanks.   ( Mike Busch does not like top overalls, but he did top his Turbo 310)

When I had a new top I flew it hard for a few hours after 5-8 hours my CHTs dropped drastically ie. 30-40* and everything stabilized FF Temps etc now 150 hours alls still good. I believe the proper break in is most important

Flying a long cross country encourages higher altitudes (less power) and long periods of constant rpm.  I believe there is a recommendation to not hold a constant RPM for the break-in period as well as keeping the power up.

I agree that you should dwell on the CHT's as long as they are safe, until break-in completes and you see the characteristic drop in CHT's.

Flying LOP, my #5 is always the hottested cylinder, and #1 the coolest, with about 70-80F difference.  ROP has a different spread, but I also only fly ROP during transitions like a climb or low level flight just before getting cleared for a climb.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the notes. I now have a bit over ten hours on my new cylinders. Did Switch from 75% to 65% power every 15 minutes. We are going to check my #4 cylinder high EGT and switch the probes around and look at the spark plugs.

Thanks

He is not against replacing cylinders.   He is against changing all the cylinders when only one or two are in need.

I had Dan ceramic coat my plane.  STUPIDLY slick looking.  I will try to add some pics when I am on another computer

The amount of money wasted on cylinders in aviation is amazing.  If I knew what I was doing I would just start selling cylinders.  It seems to be about the only way to get rich in aviation.
