Butch Posted May 22 Report Posted May 22 I'm working on a 1981 231K and need to remove the AP controller, (see pix). I believe it's a KFC 200, maybe factory installed? I do not see any attaching hardware at the front, and also couldn't find anything at the rear with a mirror. Has anyone removed one of these and can give me some pointers? Quote
Butch Posted May 22 Author Report Posted May 22 Well, after looking at a blow up of my photo I now see a couple holes at the top row. It's dark in the hangar and I didn't see those, I'll check it out tomorrow. Quote
Aerodon Posted May 22 Report Posted May 22 Have a look at this recent thread with pictures. Loosening the 2 screws from the front should release a 'clamp' and then the unit will slide forward. Then there are 4 crews holding the connectors in place. That plastic surround also comes out. Quote
0TreeLemur Posted May 26 Report Posted May 26 Related dumb question. If an aircraft does not have a KC290 autopilot controller installed in that location, I suppose that means that there is a hollow space behind the cover? How does one remove the blank cover? I'm thinking storage. Quote
Pinecone Posted May 27 Report Posted May 27 There is a thread around when this was asked. I am looking to have my O2D2 unit mounted there. Quote

I'm thinking storage. The cover is held in place by two screws at the top and two at the bottom. You have to access them from the rear. I used a right angle ratcheting screwdriver. The screw holes in my panel were slotted so I could just loosen the screws and then slide the panel out from the front. There’s nothing behind the panel, so if you want to make a storage area you’d have to make a box of some sort, but you could use the same four screws to attach it. The space is several inches deep. 1 Quote

If worth the space, could have my son 3-D print a receptacle of some kind. Not deep enough for a pen it sounds like. That would be the first thing I would think of using it for. Quote
Aerodon Posted May 30 Report Posted May 30 This is the bracket I made to replace the plastic cover on the Mooney pedestal. The two large holes on the bottom are to stick a screwdriver through to tighten the top screw. I might have to remake it, the post lights might get in the way of the screwdriver for the top screws. The two bottom slots are for the bottom screws. Both top and bottom are adjustable to get the front face aligned with the pedestal on the sides. Unlike the original, the sides are open, but I can live with that because it is out of sight. I can make more on my CNC machine, with any cutouts for USB, annunciator, gauges etc. Aerodon 1 Quote
Aerodon Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 You might have two rivets to remove on the pilots side too. This is what the cover and space looks like. Two rivets on the side, two screws and fender washers top and another two on the bottom. 1 Quote
